Abstract. The eSWua project is based on measurements performed by all the instruments installed by the upper atmosphere physics group of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Italy and on all the related studies. The aim is the realization of a hardware-software system to standardize historical and real-time observations for different instruments. An interactive Web site, supported by a well organized database, can be a powerful tool for the scientific and technological community in the field of telecommunications and space weather. The most common and useful database type for our purposes is the relational one, in which data are organized in tables for petabytes data archiving and the complete flexibility in data retrieving. The project started in June 2005 and will last till August 2007. In the first phase the major effort has been focused on the design of hardware and database architecture. The first two databases related to the DPS4 digisonde and GISTM measurements are complete concerning populating, tests and output procedures. Details on the structure and Web tools concerning these two databases are presented, as well as the general description of the project and technical features.

The Polar Cap (PC) indices were approved by the International Association for Geomagnetism and Aeromony (IAGA) by Resolution No. 3 (2013) noting that “IAGA … recommends use of the PC index by the international scientific community in its near-real time and definitive forms”. PC indices were made available in 2014 at the web portal http://pcindex.org holding near-real time as well as final index values. The near-real time PC index values are not permanently available. However, analyses of indices on basis of occasional downloads have detected differences between near-real time and final PC indices of up to 3.65 mV/m (Stauning, 2018b, Ann Geophys, 36, 621–631). At such differences, one or the other index may indicate (or hide) strong geomagnetic activity without justification in the actual conditions. The present work has disclosed the cause of observed large differences between real-time and final PC index values in the IAGA-endorsed versions. In addition, anticipated differences are derived on a general basis from the available basic magnetic data by using the index calculation procedures and calibration constants provided by the PC index suppliers. It is shown that corresponding or even larger anomalies are expected to be common during moderate to strong magnetic activity where the near-real time PC indices might otherwise prove very useful for space weather monitoring, e.g., for power grid protection. An alternative real-time PC index derivation scheme described here reduces the excessive differences between real-time and final PC index values by an order of magnitude.

The paper presents the implementation of geoportal for landslide monitoring which which includes two subsystems: a system for acquisition, storage and distribution of data on landslides and real time alert system. System for acquisition, storage and distribution of data on landslides include raster and vector spatial data on landslides affected areas, as well as metadata. Alert system in real time is associated with a sensor for detecting displacement, which performs constant measurements and signals in case of exceeding the reference value. The system was developed in accordance with the standards in the field of GIS: ISO 19100 series of standards and OpenGIS Consortium and is based on service-oriented architecture and principles of spatial data infrastructures.

Waterways can contribute to the beauty and livelihood of urban areas, but maintaining their hydro-ecosystem health is challenging because they are often recipients of contaminated water from stormwater runoff and other discharges. Public awareness of local waterways’ health and community impacts to these waterways is usually poor due to of lack of easily available information. To improve community awareness of water quality in urban waterways in New Zealand, a web portal was developed featuring a real-time waterways monitoring system, a public forum, historical data, interactive maps, contaminant modelling scenarios, mitigation recommendations, and a prototype contamination alert system. The monitoring system featured in the web portal is unique in the use of wireless mesh network technology, direct integration with online modelling, and a clear target of public engagement. The modelling aims to show the origin of contaminants within the local catchment and to help the community prioritize mitigation efforts to improve water quality in local waterways. The contamination alert system aims to keep managers and community members better informed and to provide a more timely response opportunity to avert any unplanned or accidental contamination of the waterways. Preliminary feedback has been positive and is being supported by local and regional authorities. The system was developed in a cost-effective manner providing a community focussed solution for quantifying and mitigating key contaminants in urban catchments and is applicable and transferable to other cities with similar stormwater challenges.

Abstract Objectives/Scope This paper presents an innovative web tool developed for the seismic monitoring of critical infrastructure. As an example, we describe an application for the ENI offshore facilities, Jangkrik and Merakes Fields Development, offshore Indonesia. Methods, Procedures, Process The system monitors reported seismic activity in a project area, and issues warnings when earthquakes detected may have directly or indirectly impacted facilities. Notifications allow the owner to optimize decisions regarding post-earthquake asset surveys and maintenance, avoiding the need for inspections in areas not significantly affected. A system of email alerts and a web based GIS platform provide the end-user with a tool to control its own assets. Results, Observations, Conclusions The purpose of the tool is to indirectly monitor earthquakes in an area and identify those which may have damaged the Oil and Gas facilities of interest. This identification requires accurate near real-time earthquake data such as date, time, location, magnitude, and focal depth. To this end, the system retrieves earthquake data from a qualified set of public seismic agencies. The system computes the expected values of shaking at the specific offshore facilities (platforms, subsea structures, pipelines, etc.). Calculations are based on sets of Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs) selected to match the seismotectonic environment. The expected values of seismic acceleration generated by an earthquake are compared with threshold values and a warning message is issued to the facilities supervisors when the ground acceleration exceeds design values. Threshold values related to secondary seismic effects (e.g., seismically induced landslides, debris flow) which could affect facilities integrity are also considered in the alert system. Threshold values are defined considering project seismic and geohazard documents, to summarize strong ground motion parameters that could potentially trigger damaging seismic geohazards, and project design documents to collect all data about seismic design of the assets. Monitoring intervals are defined based on the documentation screening. Several alarm levels are selected, based on the potential severity of earthquake effects. The more severe levels of ground motion, with high damage potential, can trigger recommendation for inspection. Novel/Additive Information Asset integrity and safety are key drivers in the offshore petroleum industry. Safety performance with respect to earthquakes is a fundamental issue in all seismic prone areas. The seismic alert system presented highlights, in near real time, earthquakes that are potentially critical for structures in an Oil and Gas field. This allows the owners to make quick decisions and plan necessary intervention regarding assets affected directly or indirectly by earthquakes. Exploiting the wide background of knowledge in engineering and geoscience and the modern availability of global earthquake data, the tool can provide useful assistance in managing asset integrity, regardless of the availability of local seismic networks or strong motion stations.
