Resonant Production

The resonant production of electron-positron pairs by a hard gamma-ray on nucleus in an external electromagnetic field is studied theoretically. The main property of this process is that the initial process of the second order in the fine structure constant in an external field effectively splits into two successive processes of the first order due to the fact that in resonant conditions intermediate virtual electron (positron) becomes a real particle. One of these processes is a single-photoproduction of electron-positron pair in a laser field (laser-stimulated Breit-Wheeler process) another is a laser-assisted scattering of electron (positron) on nucleus (laser-assisted Mott scattering). It is shown that the resonances are possible only for the energies of the initial hard gamma-ray more than the characteristic threshold energy. Resonant differential cross section of this process is obtained. It is shown that the resonant differential cross section can significantly exceed the corresponding cross section without an external field. The obtained results may be experimentally verified using the facilities of pulsed laser radiation (SLAC, FAIR, XFEL, ELI, XCELS).

We present theoretical predictions for the spectral, temporal and intensity signatures of the electromagnetic radiation emitted during the process of the gravitational collapse of a stellar core to a black hole, during which electromagnetic field strengths rise over the critical value for e+e- pair creation. The last phases of this gravitational collapse are studied, leading to the formation of a black hole with a subcritical electromagnetic field, likely with zero charge, and an outgoing pulse of initially optically thick e+e--photon plasma. Such a pulse reaches transparency at Lorentz gamma factors of 102–104. We find a clear signature in the outgoing electromagnetic signal, drifting from a soft to a hard spectrum, on very precise time-scales and with a very specific intensity modulation. The relevance of these theoretical results for the understanding of short gamma-ray bursts is outlined.

A source of gamma rays has been found at right ascension 20h15m, declination +35°, with an uncertainty of 6° in each coordinate. Its flux is (1·5 ± 0·8) x 10-4photons cm-2sec-1at 100 MeV. Possible identifications are reviewed, but no conclusion is reached. The mechanism producing the radiation is also uncertain.

AbstractThe experiment SONG (SOlar Neutron and Gamma rays) for the low altitude satellite CORONAS-I is described. The instrument is capable to provide gamma-ray line and continuum detection in the energy range 0.1 – 100 MeV as well as detection of neutrons with energies above 30 MeV. As a by-product, the electrons in the range 11 – 108 MeV will be measured too. The pulse shape discrimination technique (PSD) is used.
