<p><span class="fontstyle0">Kinetic linear instability analysis and hybrid simulations are carried out to examine the role of mirror instability in scattering the pickup ions in the outer heliosheath. The dynamics of these pickup ions is essential to<br />the understanding of the energetic neutral atom (ENA) ribbon observed by the Interstellar Boundary EXplorer<br />(IBEX). While most previous studies have focused on the ion cyclotron instability driven by the pickup ions,<br />recent work based on a simple ring velocity distribution of the pickup ions suggested that the mirror mode can<br />also be unstable and contribute to the scattering of the pickup ions. The present study performs linear analysis<br />as well as hybrid simulations for a more realistic, multi-component pickup ion velocity distribution given by the<br />global modeling of neutral atoms in the heliosphere. The linear theory results indicate unstable mirror modes<br />with considerable growth rates. The corresponding hybrid simulations further confirm that the mirror modes can<br />grow and aid the pitch-angle broadening of the pickup ions. So the role of mirror mode should not be ignored in<br />the stability study of the outer heliosheath pickup ions.</span> </p>

Abstract. We discuss two different physical processes that create localized high β plasma regions. One is nonlinear wave-steepening, generating magnetic decreases (MDs) by a ponderomotive force. The other is the mirror instability generating alternating high and low β plasma regions. It is demonstrated that MDs and mirror modes are observationally quite different structures. MDs spatially occur in interplanetary space and mirror modes primarily in planetary magnetosheaths. MDs are characterized by: 1) variable (exponentially decreasing number with increasing) angular changes, 2) variable (exponentially decreasing) thicknesses, and 3) no characteristic inter-event spacings. In sharp contrast, mirror modes are characterized by: 1) little or no angular changes across the structures, 2) a characteristic scale size, and 3) are quasiperiodic in nature. Arguments are presented for the recently observed magnetic dips in the heliosheath being mirror mode structures. The sources of free energy for instability are discussed. Both structures are important for energetic particle transport in astrophysical and heliospheric plasmas.

<p><span>The stability of the pickup ions in the outer heliosheath has been studied by many researchers because of its relevance to the energetic neutral atom (ENA) ribbon observed by the Interstellar Boundary EXplorer. However, previous studies are primarily limited to pickup ions of near </span><span>90° </span><span>pickup angles, the angle between the pickup ion injection velocity and the background, local interstellar magnetic field. Investigations on pickup ions of smaller pickup angles are still lacking. In this paper, linear kinetic dispersion analysis and hybrid simulations are carried out to examine the plasma instabilities driven by pickup ions of ring-beam velocity distributions at various pickup angles between zero and </span><span>90°</span><span>. </span><span>Parallel propagating waves are studied in the parameter regime where the parallel thermal spread of the pickup ions falls into the Alfvén cyclotron stability gap. </span><span>The linear analysis results and hybrid simulations both show that the fastest growing modes are the right-hand helicity waves propagating in the direction of the background magnetic field, and the maximum growth rate occurs at the pickup angle of </span><span>82°</span><span>. The simulation results further reveal that the saturation level of the fluctuating magnetic fields for pickup angles below </span><span>45° </span><span>is higher than that for pickup angles above </span><span>45°</span><span>. So, the scattering of pickup ions at near zero pickup angles is likely more pronounced than that at near </span><span>90° </span><span>pickup angles</span> .</p>
