We study two nonlinear processes that are efficient in the spectral redistribution of Alfvén wave energy - second harmonic generation, and scalar decay. Both processes transport the energy of AWs towards smaller scales and/or higher frequencies, and can accelerate the energization of space plasmas implied by recent SOHO observations.

We investigate the problem of spatial depletion of propagating lower-hybrid waves in an inhomogeneous plasma. In particular, we consider the nonlinear evolution of a lower-hybrid pump which is coupled to a daughter lower-hybrid decay wave excited by low-frequency density perturbations. Our results show that pump depletion occurs when three-dimensional effects are included. This phenomenon competes with the filamentation of the pump caused by self- interaction. Implications to lower-hybrid heating experiments are discussed.

Abstract. Recent high resolution measurements of POLAR and FAST satellites have revealed two-dimensional coherent structures in the polar cap boundary layer (PCBL) region. Since the ion temperature is often observed to be greater than the electron temperature in this region, electron acoustic waves can exist as a normal mode of the plasma system. It is shown that the nonlinear evolution of such waves can be modelled by the coupled Davey-Stewartson I equations. These equations, which are a generalization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation to two dimensions, admit exponentially localized solutions called dromions. A detailed parametric characterization of the regions of existence of such solutions is presented in the context of the PCBL region.
