Abstract Devastation associated with tsunamis is well known on the global scale. Flank collapse at volcanic islands is among the mechanisms triggering tsunamis, but very few examples document interaction between landslides and volcanic activity. The study of three well-preserved medieval tsunami deposits recently discovered along the coast of Stromboli volcano (Aeolian Islands, southern Italy) enabled a detailed characterization of the tsunami sequences intercalated with volcaniclastic deposits and primary tephra and allowed reconstruction of the likely sequence of volcanic events. In one case, a violent explosion possibly preceded the tsunami, whereas in the youngest event, the lateral collapse of the volcano flank triggered a tsunami wave that was rapidly followed by sustained explosive magmatic activity and ensuing prolonged ash venting. The hypothesized tsunami-triggering dynamics suggests a close link between volcanic activity and flank collapse, further confirming that the persistent activity at Stromboli makes the volcano particularly susceptible to tsunami generation.

This paper considers a novel approach for integration between molecular engineering of XNA-based structures and additive manufacturing of XNA-based devices based on multiparametric characterization of XNAs by different functional descriptors (such as physical properties of XNA-based materials and precursors of XNA-based molecular devices) and the possibility of thermal or electron-beam processing as a prerequisite of the industrial technical process development for such device implementation. This can be performed in the framework of additive manufacturing by connecting the output of the XNA synthesizer or nucleic acid synthesizer with 3D-printer nozzles in such a way that oligos / AGCTX products are supported into the nozzles separately.

<p>Stromboli volcano is well known for its persistent explosive activity, with hundreds of explosions every day ejecting ash and scoria up to heights of several tens/few hundreds of meters. Such a mild activity is however punctuated by lava flows and major/paroxysmal explosions, that represent a much larger hazard. On July 3rd and August 28th 2019, two paroxysmal explosions occurred at Stromboli, generating an eruptive column that quickly raised up to 5 km above the sea level. The Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) emitted an advisory to the civil aviation with a two-hour delay. The various processes of this event were monitored near and far field by infrasonic arrays up to distance of 3,500 km and by the Italian national seismic network at range of hundreds of kilometres. Using state-of-the-art propagation modeling, we aim at identifying the various seismic and infrasound phases of the event to better characterize the volcanic source. We highlight the need for the integration of the global infrasound International Monitoring System (IMS) network with local and regional infrasound arrays capable of providing a timely early warning to VAACs. This study opens new perspectives in volcano monitoring for hazard assessment and could represent, in the future, an efficient tool in supporting VAACs activity.</p>
