Method of microwave digestion using HNO3, HCl and HF in MARS‑5 system followed by ICP-MS analysis is proposed for determination of rare earth elements (REE) in plant materials. Limits of detection are 0.0001–0.001 ppm and allow for determination of all REE in certified reference materials Tr‑1, LB‑1 and EK‑1 and new reference material NSP‑1, relative standard deviations are lower than 13 %.Influence of HF addition during microwave digestion in UltraWAVE system on the ICP-MS analysis of REE in plant materials depending on silica content is studied. Necessity of HF addition during microwave digestion for better REE recoveries is shown for plant materials with Si contents exceeding 0.1 %

Abstract Indonesia needs a proven technology for REE extraction to build a national REE industry. Monazite that has been recovered from placer deposits at Bangka-Belitung areas is the most potential REE source. In the future, ion adsorption type will be another potential source of REE deposits. This paper describes the sequential REE extraction of the weathered crusts of granitoids from Sibolga using sequential extraction ICP-MS analysis is applied to determine bulk samples mineralogical compositions and REE content. The total REE (∑REE) content of weathered crusts of granitoids from Sibuluhan Sihaporas A ranges from 265 to 479 ppm, while the amount of ∑REE leached by sequential extraction range from 151 to 263 ppm, and the percentage of adsorbed ∑REE ranges from 55 to 74%. In comparison, Sibuluhan Sihaporas B ranges from 302 to 634 ppm, 82 to 198 ppm, and 28 to 44%, respectively. ∑REE content of weathered granitoids crusts from Sarudik ranges from 135 to 219 ppm, while that SREE leached by sequential extraction range from 21 to 82 ppm, and percentage of adsorbed ∑REE range from 11 to 50 %, while that Sibolga Julu ranges from 191 to 304 ppm, 111 to 138 ppm, and 27 to 44%.

In the Tanshan area, which is at the Liupanshui Basin, abundant oil shale resources are associated with coals. We analyzed the cores, geochemistry of rare earth elements (REE) and trace element of oil shale with ICP-MS technology to define the palaeo-sedimentary environment, material source and geological significance of oil shale in this area. The results of the summed compositions of REE, and the total REE contents (SREE), in the Yan'an Formation oil shale are slightly higher than the global average of the composition of the upper continental crustal (UCC) and are lower than that of North American shales. The REE distribution pattern is characterized by right-inclined enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE) and relative loss of heavy rare earth elements (HREE), which reflects the characteristics of crustal source deposition. There is a moderate degree of differentiation among LREE, while the differences among HREE are not obvious. The dEu values show a weak negative anomaly and the dCe values show no anomaly, which are generally consistent with the distribution of REE in the upper crust. The characteristics of REE and trace elements indicate that the oil shale formed in an oxygen-poor reducing environment and that the paleoclimatic conditions were relatively warm and humid. The degree of differentiation of REE indicates that the sedimentation rate in the study area was low, which reflected the characteristics of relatively deep sedimentary water bodies and distant source areas. The results also proved that the source rock mainly consisted of calcareous mudstone, and a small amount of granite was also mixed in.
