The mechanism and quantitative descriptions of nonlinear fluid flow through rock fractures are difficult issues of high concern in underground engineering fields. In order to study the effects of fracture geometry and loading conditions on nonlinear flow properties and normalized transmissivity through fracture networks, stress-dependent fluid flow tests were conducted on real rock fracture networks with different number of intersections (1, 4, 7, and 12) and subjected to various applied boundary loads (7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 kN). For all cases, the inlet hydraulic pressures ranged from 0 to 0.6 MPa. The test results show that Forchheimer’s law provides an excellent description of the nonlinear fluid flow in fracture networks. The linear coefficient a and nonlinear coefficient b in Forchheimer’s law J=aQ+bQ2 generally decrease with the number of intersections but increase with the boundary load. The relationships between a and b can be well fitted with a power function. A nonlinear effect factor E=bQ2/(aQ+bQ2) was used to quantitatively characterize the nonlinear behaviors of fluid flow through fracture networks. By defining a critical value of E = 10%, the critical hydraulic gradient was calculated. The critical hydraulic gradient decreases with the number of intersections due to richer flowing paths but increases with the boundary load due to fracture closure. The transmissivity of fracture networks decreases with the hydraulic gradient, and the variation process can be estimated using an exponential function. A mathematical expression T/T0=1-exp⁡(-αJ-0.45) for decreased normalized transmissivity T/T0 against the hydraulic gradient J was established. When the hydraulic gradient is small, T/T0 holds a constant value of 1.0. With increasing hydraulic gradient, the reduction rate of T/T0 first increases and then decreases. The equivalent permeability of fracture networks decreases with the applied boundary load, and permeability changes at low load levels are more sensitive.

Abstract In the present study, the fluid flow in a periodic, non-isotropic dual scale porous media consisting of permeable square rods in inline arrangement is analyzed to determine permeability, numerically. The continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are solved to obtain the velocity and pressure distributions in the unit structures of the dual scale porous media for flows within Darcy region. Based on the obtained results, the intrinsic inter and intraparticle permeabilities and the bulk permeability tensor of the dual scale porous media are obtained for different values of inter and intraparticle porosities. The study is performed for interparticle porosities between 0.4 and 0.75 and for intraparticle porosities from 0.2 to 0.8. A correlation based on Kozeny-Carman relationship in terms of inter and intraparticle porosities and permeabilities is proposed to determine the bulk permeability tensor of the dual scale porous media.

This paper studies the artificial outflow boundary condition for the Navier-Stokes system. This type of condition is widely used and it is therefore very important to study its influence on a numerical solution of the corresponding boundary-value problem. We particularly focus on the role of the coefficient in front of the nonlinear term in the boundary condition on the outflow. The influence of this term is examined numerically, comparing the obtained results in a close neighbourhood of the outflow. The numerical experiment is carried out for a fluid flow through the channel with so called sudden extension. Presented numerical results are obtained by means of the OpenFOAM toolbox. They confirm that the kinetic energy of the flow in the channel can be controlled by means of the proposed boundary condition.

Most rock masses contain natural fractures. In many engineering applications, a detailed understanding of the characteristics of fluid flow through a fractured rock mass is critically important for design, performance analysis, and uncertainty/risk assessment. In this context, rock fractures and fracture networks play a decisive role in conducting fluid through the rock mass as the permeability of fractures is in general orders of magnitudes greater than that of intact rock matrices, particularly in hard rock settings. This paper reviews the modelling methods developed over the past four decades for the generation of representative fracture networks in rock masses. It then reviews some of the authors’ recent developments in numerical modelling and experimental studies of linear and non-linear fluid flow through fractures and fracture networks, including challenging issues such as fracture wall roughness, aperture variations, flow tortuosity, fracture intersection geometry, fracture connectivity, and inertia effects at high Reynolds numbers. Finally, it provides a brief review of two applications of methods developed by the authors: the Habanero coupled hydro-thermal heat extraction model for fractured reservoirs and the Kapunda in-situ recovery of copper minerals from fractures, which is based on a coupled hydro-chemical model.

The Navier – Stokes equations were used to obtain the velocity profile for two different fluid flow problems, firstly to a laminar flow through a pipe and secondly to flow of incompressible fluid between two boundaries, one boundary is the air and the other boundary moving with a velocity, inclined at an angle . The velocity profiles were obtained and presented in a diagram of showing how the fluid flow through the channels.
