ABSTRACTThe electrical noise characteristics of thin film random networks of single walled carbon nanotubes with lengths of 820nm, 210nm and 130nm, were evaluated in addition to mixed length and pure semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube networks. This study represents one of the first experimental studies in which highly characterized length sorted single walled nanotubes networks have been investigated to isolate their contributions to 1/f noise. In this work we evaluate the noise power spectrum, in the low frequency range, for each of our type sorted samples and demonstrate the effect of nanotube type, length, dimensionality and critical percolation conditions in 1/f noise generating mechanisms. 1/f noise in two-dimensional (2-D) thin films of random network, homogeneous length sorted SWNTs at their percolation threshold in contrast to three dimensional (3-D) thin films of mixed length SWNT and purely semi-conducting SWNT thin films were investigated. We find that at their respective critical percolation thresholds, xc, length sorted SWNT networks exhibit atypical reduced noise amplitude (A) characteristics compared to their mixed length and semi-conducting nanotube counterparts.

Abstract Molecular neuromorphic devices are composed of a random and extremely dense network of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) complexed with polyoxometalate (POM). Such devices are expected to have the rudimentary ability of reservoir computing (RC), which utilizes signal response dynamics and a certain degree of network complexity. In this study, we performed RC using multiple signals collected from a SWNT/POM random network. The signals showed a nonlinear response with wide diversity originating from the network complexity. The performance of RC was evaluated for various tasks such as waveform reconstruction, a nonlinear autoregressive model, and memory capacity. The obtained results indicated its high capability as a nonlinear dynamical system, capable of information processing incorporated into edge computing in future technologies.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with incovalently attached iodine, were obtained by physical absorption. The different diameter sizes of SWCNTs, with different numbers of iodine molecule, enhance the density contrast between them which becomes evident in density gradient ultracentrifugation (DGU) targeted to sort certain species of SWCNTs. The results of optical absorbance and photoluminescence emission showed that iodine-assisted DGU preferentially separates semiconducting nanotubes with certain diameters [(6, 5), (7, 5), (8, 4), and (7, 6)].We have applied these semiconducting, species enriched SWCNTs to prepare solution-processed field effect transistor (FET) devices with random nanotube network active channels. The devices exhibit stable p-type semiconductor behavior in air with very promising characteristics. The on-off current ratio reaches up to 2 × 104 within a narrow window of voltage (-10 V to 10 V), and estimated hole mobility of 21.7 cm2 V-1 s-1.
