ABSTRACTElastomeric networks prepared by tetrafunctionally end linking hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) chains (PDMS) were filled by the in-situ precipitation of silica. The resulting networks were investigated under uniaxial elongation, biaxial extension, shear, and torsion in order to characterize the resulting changes in mechanical properties. Compared with the unfilled networks, the silica-filled materials showed large reinforcing effects. Specifically, their values of the modulus, ultimate strength, and rupture energy increased significantly. The results thus indicate that the PDMS networks filled by the in-situ precipitation of silica have very good mechanical properties in several, rather different deformations. Examples of other deformations of interest are equilibrium swelling, and dynamic cycling for characterization of compression set.

The demand for tailored, micrometer-scaled biomaterials in cell biology and (cell-free) biotechnology has led to the development of tunable microgel systems based on natural polymers, such as hyaluronic acid (HA). To precisely tailor their physicochemical and mechanical properties and thus to address the need for well-defined microgel systems, in this study, a bottom-up material guide is presented that highlights the synergy between highly selective bio-orthogonal click chemistry strategies and the versatility of a droplet microfluidics (MF)-assisted microgel design. By employing MF, microgels based on modified HA-derivates and homobifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-crosslinkers are prepared via three different types of click reaction: Diels–Alder [4 + 2] cycloaddition, strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC), and UV-initiated thiol–ene reaction. First, chemical modification strategies of HA are screened in-depth. Beyond the microfluidic processing of HA-derivates yielding monodisperse microgels, in an analytical study, we show that their physicochemical and mechanical properties—e.g., permeability, (thermo)stability, and elasticity—can be systematically adapted with respect to the type of click reaction and PEG-crosslinker concentration. In addition, we highlight the versatility of our HA-microgel design by preparing non-spherical microgels and introduce, for the first time, a selective, hetero-trifunctional HA-based microgel system with multiple binding sites. As a result, a holistic material guide is provided to tailor fundamental properties of HA-microgels for their potential application in cell biology and (cell-free) biotechnology.

The effects of neutralization and salt on the structure and mechanical properties of polyacrylic acid (PAA) gels under equivolume conditions were investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements and tensile tests. We attained the equivolume condition by immersing a piece of PAA gel sample in an ion reservoir containing linear PAA, NaOH, and NaCl at prescribed concentrations (post-ion-tuning). The volume fraction of the linear polymer was set to be the same as that of the gel so as to satisfy the iso-osmotic pressure at the reference state. Various types of reservoirs were prepared by adding NaOH and/or NaCl with different concentrations to the reference reservoir, followed by immersing a PAA gel piece. In the SAXS measurements, a scattering peak appeared, and the scattering intensity at q = 0 decreased by neutralization, while the addition of salt increased the scattering intensity. On the other hand, Young’s modulus measured with the tensile test decreased with neutralization; however, it scarcely changed with the addition of salt. The newly developed equivolume post-ion-tuning technique may serve as a new standard scheme to study polyelectrolyte gels.

New polyols with isocyanuric structure were synthesized by thiol-ene “click” chemistry of triallyl isocyanurate with 1-thioglycerol and 2-mercaptoethanol. The synthesized polyols, prepared with high reaction rates and in very high yields, were chemically and structurally characterized. These polyols were used for the preparation of rigid polyurethane foams with excellent physical–mechanical properties and inherent flame retardancy. By alkoxylation of isocyanuric polyols with propylene oxide and/or ethylene oxide in a self-catalytic process, odorless polyols with lower hydroxyl numbers and lower viscosities were obtained, leading to PU foams with good properties, but without inherent flame retardancy. The synthesized polyols with isocyanuric structure are suitable for the preparation of all types of rigid polyurethane foams, including thermoinsulation of freezers, buildings, storage tanks and pipes for the food and chemical industry, for packaging, and as wood substitutes.
