A series of copolymers containing thieno[2,3-f]benzofuran unit with different alkyl side chains are synthesized. The best photovoltaic performance with power conversion efficiency over 11% have been realized.

A series of random conjugated polymers' solid state packing and photovoltaic performances were systematically tuned upon simply varying the ratio of side chain and afforded PCE 10.3%.

Small molecules with alkyl side chains of different lengths were prepared with 2,2′-bithiophene, terthiophene and thiobarbituric acid as the central core, spacer and end-cap. Uniform, shorter chain lengths gave stronger intermolecular interactions, favoring crystallization.
