In a previous investigation of the absorption spectra and sensitising properties of some iso cyanine dyes,* the influence of the solvent was examined and it was found that the absorption maximum was shifted toward the red as the refractive index of the solvent increased. This is in accordance with Kundt’s law. The absorption in water, however, differs markedly from that in organic solvents. In the latter the spectrum consists of a prominent band in the orange and a half-shade nearer the blue. In water this half-shade has become a separate band comparable in intensity with the orange. Absorption curves in alcohol and water are shown. It is convenient to term the band near the red the β-(organic) band, the one nearer the blue the α -(water) band. It appeared desirable to investigate this difference further.

In this work, the subbituminous fly ash (SFA) in Thailand has been investigated for their compositions and crystal structures. Borosilicate glasses were prepare from SFA , B2O3, Na2O and various concentration of Fe2O3 by melt quenching technique. The results have shown that the chemical composition comprised with SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3. The crystal structures of SFA were raised of mullite and quartz phases. The density and refractive index values of glasses were found to increase with increasing of Fe2O3 concentrations. The hardness values have been decreased with increasing of Fe2O3 content. The absorption spectra are corresponding to ferric and ferrous ions in wavelength of 440 nm and 1,050 nm and the color of glasses are green to yellow.

In this work, the physical and optical properties of soda-lime-borate glasses doped with V2O5 concentration of 0.0 to 2.5 in mol% have been investigated. The glass samples were prepared by the normal melt-quench technique. The results show that the density and refractive index decreased with additional 0.5 mol% content of V2O5. Then both results increased with increasing V2O5 content from 1.0-2.5 mol%. The optical absorption spectra of glass samples were measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer in the wavelength range 300-1100 nm and color coordinate in CIEL*a*b* system. The absorption peaks locate around 605 and 960 nm for all V2O5 concentration that are associated to V4+ ions and produce the brown color.

The tellurite 60TeO2-20PbO-(20-x)ZnO-xBaF2 (x = 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 11) series glass samples were prepared. The samples’ SEM, XRD, DSC, density, refractive index, and absorption spectra were tested. A self-made optical platform was used to measure and calibrate the refractive index. The relationship between glass composition and crystallinity was discussed. The effects of density, molar refractive index, and metal standard value on the refractive index of glass samples were studied. The results showed that TPZBF glass has a high refractive index, and the refractive index increases with the increase in BaF2 content.

This research reports on the physical and optical properties of three series of borophosphate glasses combined with barium oxide (BaO), following BaBP-A, BaBP-B and BaBP-C, that were prepared by a melting and quenching process. The density, molar volume, refractive index and absorption spectra were investigated the effect of BaO on different glass structures. The results show that the densities and refractive index of the glass samples increased as the BaO (BaBP-A and BaBP-B) and B2O3 (BaBP-C) mole percentage increased. The molar volume of the glasses shows the adversative trend as the density: the molar volume decreased as the BaO and B2O3 content increased. The absorption spectra of all glass samples were slightly shifted to the longer wavelength, ultraviolet 250-350 nm, with increasing the concentration of BaO.

Glasses with composition xCdO-(40-x) Na2CO3-60H3BO3; x = 10, 20, 30 and 40 mol% were prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique and checked by XRD technique for their amorphous nature. An increase in density and refractive index of the samples with an increase in content of CdO has been observed and discussed. The optical absorption spectra of the glasses were recorded in the range 200–1100 nm and was used to find optical mobility gap, Urbach energy, and cut-off wavelength for each sample. The decrease in optical mobility gap with increase in CdO points towards the compactness of the structure with the addition of CdO. FTIR spectroscopy reveals the presence of trigonal and tetrahedral borate units, and the results indicate the conversion of BO3 to BO4 units with the increase in CdO content.
