Viscosities (ƞ) of solutions of 1- propanol and 2-propanol have been determined in aqueous systems of varying composition (0.16-3.64 mol dm-3) at 298 K. The ƞ/ƞ0 data have been analyzed in the light of reduced Jone-Dole equation ƞ/ƞ0 = BC+1. The results in the regards to solute-solvent interaction in aqueous solutions of both the alcohols have been discussed in the terms of the value B. The result of study reveals that both the alcohols behave as the structure makers in the water. The result shows that solute-solvent type interaction of same magnitude exists in water-alcohol system.

Silver myristate/AgBr composite particles were prepared by using silver nitrate, sodium hydroxide, myristic acid, and sodium bromide as raw materials and PVP as surfactant in water-alcohol system and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that silver myristate/AgBr composite particles are composed of rod-like silver myristate grains with a layer structure and small silver bromide particles formed on the surface of silver myristate. Silver bromide can extend the ultraviolet absorbance range of silver myristate. The size of silver myristate is about 260nm and the average size of silver bromide is about 44nm. TG and DSC analysis showed that the reaction was carried out completely. The composite particles start to decompose at about 210oC. Silver bromide of the composite particles melts at 418.2oC.

Capraria biflora L. (Scrophulariaceae) is a perennial shrub widely distributed in several countries of tropical America. The present work verified the cytotoxic and antioxidant potential of biflorin, an o-naphthoquinone isolated from C. biflora collected in the northeast region of Brazil. The cytotoxicity was tested on three different animal cell models: mouse erythrocytes, sea urchin embryos and tumor cells, while the antioxidant activity was assayed by the thiocyanate method. Biflorin lacked activity on mouse erythrocytes as well as on the development of sea urchin eggs, but strongly inhibited the growth of all five tested tumor cell lines, especially the skin, breast and colon cancer cells with IC50 of 0.40, 0.43 and 0.88 μg/ml for B16, MCF-7 and HCT-8, respectively. Biflorin also showed potent antioxidant activity against autoxidation of oleic acid in a water/alcohol system.

Background: Triangular phase diagrams are important to understand the phase behaviors in ternary systems. The salting out of alcohol from water by kosmotropic salt has long been known, but the molecular interactions and the mechanism of bond breaking and making processes has not yet been fully understood. Objective: To understand the salting-out of 2-propanol from water using kosmotropic salts (Na2S2O3, Na2SO4 and Na2SO3). To study the phase equilibria of liquid-liquid, liquid-solid and liquid-liquid-solid system by constructing ternary phase diagrams. To determine the solute-solute, solute-solvent, and solvent-solvent molecular interactions to resolve the salting- out effect. Methods: The solubility data of Na2S2O3/Na2SO4/Na2SO3 salts have been reported in pure water, 2-propanol and water + 2-propanol mixtures in different concentrations at 298.15 ± 1 K. The ternary phase diagrams have been constructed from the obtained solubility data. The volumetric and acoustic data of binary and ternary systems of water + 2-propanol, water + salt and water + 2-propanol + salt has been determined using density meter and interferometer. Results: The ternary phase diagrams have been constructed for water+2-propanol+ Na2S2O3/Na2SO4/Na2SO3 system. The rise in sound velocity signifies more structural interactions in binary water-alcohol and water-salt systems, while the relation is rather change with the ternary system, as the water-alcohol sheath will be broken by the kosmotropic salt which results in to salt-water sheath. Conclusion: The density, sound velocity and adiabatic compressibility results suggest that phase separation phenomenon is due to the bond breaking and bond making process along with hydrophobic hydration and hydrophobic interactions. The anion S2O32-, SO42- and SO3 2- promote salting-out effect and the strength of these effects decreases in the order S2O32->SO42->SO32-.

Hydrothermal treatment method was proposed to prepare boehmite and the effect of precursors on the morphology of beohmite was investigated. On the coordinate effect of organic and inorganic flower-like AlOOH assembled by nano-plates can be obtained by Al(NO3)3 as precursor. 3D urchin-like AlOOH superstructures consisting of nanoribbons were produced from hydrate AlCl3 as reagents. Dissolution and recrystallinity of intermediate product AlOCl caused this result. Globe and hollow sphere morphologies of beohmite were synthesized by Al2(SO4)3 in a water-alcohol system. The formation mechanism is also because of the dissolution and recrystallinity of intermediate product sodium sulfate aluminum. Beohmite prepared by hydrothermal treatment was transformed to γ- Al2O3 at 600°C. The morphologies of γ- Al2O3 powders were still kept their original forms.
