UV study of properties of 5-nitro-2-furylnitromethane (I) in various solvents has shown that this compound is a very strong acid (pKa 3.98) forming an ion pair in protic solvents (water, alcohols) and existing exclusively as nitro-form in aprotic solvents (tetrachloromethane, chloroform, n-hexane, diethyl ether, dioxane). Kinetic study of tautomerism in water has given experimental values of combined rate constants of parallel reactions. Thermodynamic parameters of the tautomeric transformations have been calculated from temperature dependence of the rate constants.

Abstract. Multidimensional, heteronuclear NMR relaxation methods are used extensively to characterize the dynamics of biological macromolecules. Acquisition of relaxation datasets on proteins typically requires significant measurement time, often several days. Accordion spectroscopy offers a powerful means to shorten relaxation rate measurements by encoding the “relaxation dimension” into the indirect evolution period in multidimensional experiments. Time savings can also be achieved by non-uniform sampling (NUS) of multidimensional NMR data, which is used increasingly to improve spectral resolution or increase sensitivity per unit time. However, NUS is not commonly implemented in relaxation experiments, because most reconstruction algorithms are inherently nonlinear, leading to problems when estimating signal intensities, relaxation rate constants and their error bounds. We have previously shown how to avoid these shortcomings by combining accordion spectroscopy with NUS, followed by data reconstruction using sparse exponential mode analysis, thereby achieving a dramatic decrease in the total length of longitudinal relaxation experiments. Here, we present the corresponding transverse relaxation experiment, taking into account the special considerations required for its successful implementation in the framework of the accordion-NUS approach. We attain the highest possible precision in the relaxation rate constants by optimizing the NUS scheme with respect to the Cramér–Rao lower bound of the variance of the estimated parameter, given the total number of sampling points and the spectrum-specific signal characteristics. The resulting accordion-NUS R1ρ relaxation experiment achieves comparable precision in the parameter estimates compared to conventional CPMG (Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill) R2 or spin-lock R1ρ experiments while saving an order of magnitude in experiment time.

Rate constants of non-catalyzed hydrolysis of 3-acetyl-1,3-diphenyltriazene (I) and 3-(N-methylcarbamoyl)-1,3-diphenyltriazene (II) have been measured in the presence of salts (ammonium chloride, potassium chloride, lithium chloride, sodium chloride and bromide, ammonium sulphate, potassium sulphate, lithium sulphate, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate) within broad concentration ranges. Temperature dependence of the hydrolysis of the substrates studied has been measured in the presence of lithium sulphate within temperature range 20° to 55 °C. The results obtained have been interpreted by mechanisms of hydrolysis of the studied substances.

Four programs for the 1H NMR line shape analysis: two commercial - Winkubo (Bruker) and DNMR5 (QCPE 165) and two written in our laboratory - Newton (in Microsoft Excel) and Simtex (in Matlab) have been tested in order to get highly accurate rate constants of the hindered rotation about a single bond. For this purpose four testing criteria were used, two of them were also developed by us. As supplementary determinations the rate constants obtained for the coalescence temperature and for the thermal racemization of chromatographically separated enantiomers were used which fitted well the temperature dependence of the rate constants determined by the line shape analysis. As a test compound adamantan-1-yl 3-bromo-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl ketone was prepared and studied. It was shown that supermodified simplex method used in our algorithm (Simtex), though time consuming, gives the most accurate values of the rate constants and consequently the calculated thermodynamic parameters Ea, ∆H≠, and ∆S≠ lay in relatively narrow confidence intervals.

In this publication we report: (i) the rate constants for reaction of the hydrated electron with 1-hexyn-3-ol ((8.6 ± 0.3) × 108 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 18 °C), cinnamonitrile ((2.3 ± 0.2) × 1010 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 20 °C), and 1,3-diethyl-2-thiourea ((3.5 ± 0.3) × 108 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 22 °C). For cinnamonitrile and diethylthiourea, the temperature dependence up to 200 °C and 150 °C, respectively, is also reported; (ii) the rate constants for the reaction of the hydroxyl radical with 1-hexyn-3-ol ((5.5 ± 0.5) × 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 20 °C), cinnamonitrile ((9.2 ± 0.3) × 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 21 °C), and diethylthiourea ((8.0 ± 0.8) × 108 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 22 °C). For cinnamonitrile, the temperature dependence up to 200 °C is also reported; (iii) the rate constant for the hydrogen atom reacting with 1-hexyn-3-ol ((4.3 ± 0.4) × 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1 at 20 °C). Abstract We describe a simple, highly reproducible kinetic technique for precisely measuring temperature in spectrophotometric systems having reaction cells that are inaccessible to conventional temperature probes. The method is based on the temperature dependence of pseudo-first-order rate constants for the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of N-o-tolyl-D-glucosylamine. Temperatures of reaction cuvette contents are measured with a precision of +/- 0.05 degrees C (1 SD).
