We investigated the origin of a non-linear temperature dependence of resistivity ρab(T) in the a-b planes of YBCO, frequently observed in optimally doped twinned YBCO single crystals and thin films and in untwinned YBCO crystals along the chain direction. We performed the measurements of ρab(T) in c-axis oriented YBCO thin films that were subjected to low temperature annealing at 120–140°C (400–420 K) in argon. Our results have shown that redistribution of oxygen at a fixed oxygen content in the chain layers of YBCO with a non-linear ρab(T), leads to an increase of Tc, an increase of resistivity and a reduction of the non-linear component in ρab(T).

The frequency and temperature dependence of the ac conductance and the capacitance are studied in the frequency range of 1 to 20 kHz for the coevaporated GeO 2/ BaO thin layers sandwiched between Al metallic electrodes. The measurements are undertaken to establish the low temperature conduction in these diode structures as the electronic hopping conduction. The activation energy involved in this mechanism is evaluated.

The temperature dependence of the resistivity and the thermopower in the region from 4.2K up to 1000K for the six isostructural paramagnetic compounds TCo 2 (T=Y, Lu, Sc, Hf, Zr, Ce) is studied. The resistivity ρ (T) follows a T 2 dependence at low temperatures in all these compounds. Plotting the A values into an A vs. γ2 diagram shows that YCo 2, LuCo 2, and ScCo 2 are spinfluctuation systems (A and γ denote the coefficients in ρ (T) = ρ0 + AT 2 and that of the electronic specific heat, respectively) HfCo 2 and ZrCo 2 do not fit into this general tendency in the ( A , γ2)-diagram. The temperature dependent thermopower S(T) in YCo 2, LuCo 2 and ScCo 2 exhibits a pronounced minimum in the low temperature region. These minima are obviously connected with the existence of spin fluctuations (paramagnon-drag). Spin fluctuations in HfCo 2 and ZrCo 2 are less important. This we conclude also from the ten times smaller A-values and the missing minimum in the thermopower at low temperatures.

Most families of S-N curves determined at various temperatures present certain general regularities on whose basis the Basquin equation describing finite-life S-N curves can be generalized for various temperatures. This equation can be represented by straight lines with common slope if log-log fit for stress vs. temperature dependence is used. Deviations from these straight lines (anomalies) are evidence that additional degradation mechanisms are effective besides fatigue, whose temperature dependences differ from the mentioned temperature dependence of fatigue strength. In high-temperature region it is most often cyclic creep, in low-temperature region athermal processes of plastic deformation can play significant role in fatigue failure.
