In this study, an all-organic, partially transient epidermal sensor with functional poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) conjugated polymer printed onto a water-soluble polyethylene oxide (PEO) substrate is studied and presented. The sensor’s electronic properties were studied under static stress, dynamic load, and transient status. Electrode resistance remained approximately unchanged for up to 2% strain, and increased gradually within 6.5% strain under static stress. The electronic properties’ dependence on dynamic load showed a fast response time in the range of 0.05–3 Hz, and a reversible stretching threshold of 3% strain. A transiency study showed that the PEO substrate dissolved completely in water, while the PEDOT:PSS conjugated polymer electrode remained intact. The substrate-less, intrinsically soft PEDOT:PSS electrode formed perfect contact on human skin and stayed attached by Van der Waals force, and was demonstrated as a tattoolike epidermal sensor.

The Impact

ABSTRACTTranslation into the clinic of organic bioelectronic devices having conjugated polymers as the active material will hinge on their long-term operation in vivo. This will require the device to be subject to clinically approved sterilization techniques without a deterioration in its physical and electronic properties. To date, there remains a gap in the literature addressing the impact of this critical pre-operative procedure on the properties of conjugated polymers. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the physical and electronic properties of a sterilized porous bioelectronic patch having polyaniline as the conjugated polymer. The patch was sterilized by autoclave, ethylene oxide and gamma (γ-) irradiation at 15, 25, and 50 kGy doses. Autoclaving resulted in cracking and macroscopic degradation of the patch, while patches sterilized by γ-irradiation at 50 kGy exhibited reduced mechanical and electronic properties, attributed to chain scission and non-uniform crosslinking caused by the high dose irradiation. Ethylene oxide and γ-irradiation at 15 and 25 kGy sterilization appeared to be the most effective at maintaining the mechanical and electronic properties of the patch, as well as inducing a minimal immune response as revealed by a receding fibrotic capsule after 4 weeks implantation. Our findings pave the way towards closing the gap for the translation of organic bioelectronic devices from acute to long-term in vivo models.

A new conjugated aromatic poly[(furan-2, 5-diyl)-co-(benzylidene)] has been prepared by polycondensation of benzaldehyde and furan catalyzed by Maghnite-H+. Maghnite-H+ is a montmorillonite sheet silicate clay, which exchanged with protons. These polymers can be dissolved in high polar solvents such as DMSO, DMF, THF, or CHCl3 A kind of band-gap conjugated poly[(furan-2, 5-diyl)-co-(benzylidene)] has been synthesized by a simple method and characterized by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis. The result reveals that the band-gap of the PFB conjugated polymer has an optical band gap of 2.2 eV.
