A novel all-polymeric material with high dielectric constant (k) has been developed by blending poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with polyamide-6 (PA6). The dependence of the dielectric properties on frequency and polymer volume fraction was investigated. When the volume fraction of PA6 is 20%, the dielectric property is better than others. The SEM investigations suggest that the enhanced dielectric behavior originates from significant interfacial interactions of polymer-polymer. The XRD demonstrate that the PA6 and PVDF affect the crystalline behavior of each component. Furthermore, the stable dielectric constants of the blends could be tuned by adjusting the content of the polymers. The created high-k all-polymeric blends represent a novel type of material that are simple technology and easy to process, and is of relatively high dielectric constant, applications as flexible electronics.

Background We report the effects of nanoparticles in homeopathic preparations of copper salts on the electrical properties of polymer film. Previous work showed that the incorporation of metal-derived homeopathic medicines increases the dielectric constant and alternating current (AC) conductivity of an electroactive polymer film that is commonly used as a capacitor in the electronic industry.We report here the effect of dilution of one homeopathic medicine, Cuprum arsenicosum (CuAs), at 200C potency on the electrical properties of the polymer film of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene). Methods CuAs 200c was incorporated in the film by the solution casting method. The electrical characteristics were measured at different frequencies using an inductance, capacitance, and resistance meter. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed to detect phase change in the polymer film due to the incorporation of CuAs. Morphology and particle size were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Results At 10 kHz frequency, both dielectric constant and AC conductivity increased approximately 18 times for the polymer film when incorporated with 2 mL CuAs at 200C potency. FTIR indicated the increase in conducting phase, while FESEM and EDX confirmed the presence of spherical CuAs particles. Conclusion The incorporation of CuAs in the electroactive polymer film enhances the conductivity and dielectric constant. We conclude that these changes arise from the change in phase of the polymer film, and because of the presence of two different metals that affects the interfacial polarization.

AbstractPoly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposites filled with various expanded graphite (EG) contents were prepared via melt-mixing followed by hotpressing. The structure, electrical, and thermal properties of resulting nanocomposites were investigated. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the EG additions do not lead to structural changes of PVDF. Differential thermal calorimetry measurements revealed that EG act as a nucleating agent for PVDF molecular chains. The crystallization temperature shifted to higher temperature with increasing EG content. DMA results showed that the storage modulus and glass transition temperature can be enhanced by adding EG. The nanocomposites were found to exhibit a small percolation threshold of 6.3 vol% due to the large aspect ratio of graphite nano-sheets. A great enhancement of dielectric constant is also found as EG concentration approaches percolation threshold. Both the electrical conductivity and dielectric constant of PVDF/EG nanocomposites can be well described by the percolation theory.

ABSTRACTA ceramic-powder polymer composite, making use of a newly developed ceramics - CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) - that has a giant dielectric constant as the filler, is developed. In this work, poly(vinylidene fluoride - trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] 55/45 mol% copolymer was used as matrix. It is found that the wettability between the copolymer and CCTO is poor, which makes the solution cast composites have a poor uniformity. The uniformity and thus the dielectric constant of the composites can be significantly improved by using hot-press technology to form “sandwich” structure. It is also found that the thermal annealing process can improve the dielectric constant of the composite. The experimental data show that for the flexible composites the dielectric constant at 1 kHz can reach more than 300 at room temperature and more than 700 at ∼70 °C.
