A mild methylation of phenolic hydroxyl groups with iodomethane was enabled in the presence of sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide at room temperature. The reverse reaction, namely demethylation of methyl phenyl ethers, was easily achieved by microwave heating with neat iodotrimethylsilane.

The synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles from alkyl azides and terminal alkynes at room temperature and under microwave heating was attained using Cu(I), generated in-situ from copper(II) sulfate and phenylboronic acid, as catalyst. Twelve new triazoles were obtained in moderate to good yields (53-98%), and the products were obtained by crystallization from the mixture reaction without further purification.

ABSTRACTWe report the proof-of-principle demonstration of a methodology, called Metal-Assisted and Microwave-Accelerated Germination, to modulate the germination of plant seeds and growth of plants using gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and microwave heating. As a model plant seed, basil seeds were heated in a solution of 20 nm Au NPs using a microwave waveguide fiber connected to a solid-state microwave operating at 8 GHz at 20 W, which resulted in the development of longer basil gum as observed by optical microscopy. In control experiments, Au NPs or microwave heating was omitted to establish a baseline growth level under standard experimental conditions (no microwave heating or no Au NPs). Our results also show that hydroponic growth and soil growth of basil plants can be delayed with the use of 20 nm Au NPs at room temperature without microwave heating. The combined use of 20 nm Au NPs and microwave heating at 10 W for 6 minutes results in accelerated growth prolonged life of basil plants.

The object of this work was to use calcined kaolin-based geopolymer as an alternative material to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPCs) by applying geopolymerization processes. Geopolymer slurry was prepared from calcined kaolin and alkali activators, which consisted of 10 M NaOH and Na2SiO3 solution. The fresh slurry was cast into plastic molds and then cured at room temperature for 24 h. Reaction temperatures were measured (for 24 hours after casting). Compressive strength of the geopolymer was tested after curing at room temperature and after microwave heating. The mechanical properties increased with added plaster for microwave curing of 5 min. It is believed that this process can increase the efficiency of the production line for geopolymer.
