Hypobromous acid action upon the 6,7-unsaturated 19-substituted 5α-cholestans Va-Vc results in the formation of two types of products, the cyclic ethers IX as products of 5(O)n participation of the 19-substituent, and the bromohydrins X. All these compounds are formed from the 6α,7α-bromonium ions Va'-Vc'. Under the same conditions the B-homo-5α-cholestane derivatives VIIa-VIIc afforded solely the cyclic ethers XIV as products of 5(O)n participation of the 19-substituent in the cleavage of the bromonium ions VIIa'-VIIc'. Acid cleavage of the 6α,7α-epoxides VIb and VIc with aqueous perchloric acid or hydrobromic acid gave two types of products, i.e. the cyclic ethers XI and the diols XII or bromohydrines XIII. The cyclic ethers XI arise by 5(O)n participation of the 19-substituent. The B-homo-6α, 7α-epoxide VIIIc on cleavage with aqueous perchloric acid have solely the cyclic ether XVc and by treatment with hydrobromic acid VIIIc afforded the mixture of XVc, as the main product, and of the bromohydrin XVIc. Discussed is the similarity of the bromonium ion cleavage with the fission of the corresponding epoxides, the mechanism of these reactions and the difference in the behaviour of the isomeric olefins Ia-c, IIIa-c, Va-c and VIIa-c and epoxides IIb,c, IVb,c, VIb,c and VIIIb,c. The competition between ambident neighbouring group participation and external nucleophile attack is discussed as well as the dependence of the products ratio on the nucleophilicity of the attacking species.

Reactions of 19-hydroxy-, methoxy- and acetoxy-5-cholestenes Ia, IIa, IIIa were studied and compared with those previously obtained with analogous 3β-acetoxy-19-substituted 5-cholestenes Ib, IIb, IIIc. A marked difference was found in 19-acetoxy derivatives where the 3-unsubstituted compound IIIa yields exclusively the bromohydrin XVIa as a product of 6(O)π,n participation while the 3β-acetoxy derivative IIIb gives, apart from the analogous bromohydrin XVIb, also products of competing reactions: The epoxide XIIb and the bromohydrin XIIIb.

This review summarizes the main topics of our research and covers the period of the last 15 years. The prime interest is focused on various ways of controlling the regio- and stereoselectivity of selected organic reactions, in particular electrophilic additions, cleavage of cyclopropane rings, and allylic substitutions by means of neighboring groups and/or transition and non-transition metals. In the first part, the factors governing the course of electrophilic additions are assessed, culminating in the formulation of selection rules for the reactivity of cyclohexene systems, and in a concise synthesis of the natural cardioactive drug, strophanthidin. These studies also contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of electrophilic additions. The second part describes recent developments in the stereo- and regiocontrolled cleavage of cyclopropane rings by non-transition metals (Tl and Hg), and the reactivity and transmetalation (with Pd) of the primary products. This methodology has resulted in novel routes to unique polycyclic structures, and will have synthetic applications in the near future. Evidence for the stereospecific "corner" cleavage of the cyclopropane ring has been provided for the first time for Tl and later for Hg. The third part deals with transition metal-catalyzed allylic substitution. Evidence for a new "syn" mechanism for the formation of the intermediate (π-allyl)palladium complex has been provided, which runs counter to the generally accepted "anti" mechanism. A novel method for a Pd-catalyzed allylic oxidation has been developed and employed in the synthesis of natural sesquiterpenes. The increasing importance of transition and non-transition metals for synthetic organic chemistry is demonstrated by their unique reactivity in a number of the papers included in this review.

Kinetics Of

The kinetics of the electrophilic additions of four diarylcarbenium ions (4a-4d) to tricarbonyl(η4-cyclohepta-1,3,5-triene)iron (1) have been studied photometrically. The second-order rate constants match the linear Gibbs energy relationship log k20 °C = s(E + N) and yield the nucleophilicity parameter N(1) = 3.69. It is concluded that electrophiles with E ≥ -9 will react with complex 1 at ambient temperature.
