Globulins, albumins, and basic proteins were extracted from seeds of red kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), and their distribution was in a ratio of about 3:2:1, respectively. The globulin fraction constituted a major portion of the reserve proteins and was hydrolyzed rapidly during germination. More than 90% of the basic proteins, extractable with 0.05 N acetic acid, disappeared 12 days after germination. Although the decrease in total albumin was not as marked as with the other two fractions, a number of components of this fraction disappeared during the early stages of germination, but several new components were detected about 8 days after germination. The apparent synthesis of new globulin components during germination was also observed, but no synthesis of basic protein could be detected.

White mold (WM) caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary is the most devastating disease of common bean (dry and snap or garden bean) (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in North America. The use of a reliable screening method (SM) in common bean is crucial to improve physiological resistance to WM. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of three SM to identify physiological resistance in dry bean genotypes with different evolutionary origins and levels of resistance. Screening methods tested were: (i) the modified straw test or cut–stem (CSM); (ii) infected bean flower (IFL); and (iii) infected oat seed (IOS). A 195, ICA Bunsi, Othello, and VCW 54 dry bean were tested with the three SM. The experimental design was a split plot in randomized complete blocks with three replications in 2007 and 2008. Two independent inoculations 1 wk apart for each SM were made. The WM reaction was scored at 16, 23, and 33 d post-inoculation (DPI) using a 1 to 9 scale. There were highly significant differences between SM and its interaction with years. The CSM and IFL were the most consistent and highly correlated (r > 0.70, P < 0.01). Interspecific breeding line VCW 54 consistently had the highest WM resistance across years, SM, and evaluation dates, followed by A 195. White mold scores increased with delayed evaluations. Thus, CSM or IFL with disease assessed 33 DPI should be used for identifying common bean genotypes with high levels of physiological resistance to WM.Key words: Common bean, growth habit, race Mesoamerica, race Nueva Granada, Phaseolus vulgaris, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum

The response of ‘C-20’ navy bean and ‘Frankenmuth’ soft white winter wheat grown in rotation to clomazone, imazethapyr, bentazon, and acifluorfen was examined. Clomazone at 560 and 430 g ai ha−1plus 800 g ai ha−1pendimethalin and 2000 g ai ha−1chloramben visibly injured navy bean in 1 of 2 yr. However, navy bean seed moisture at harvest and yield was not reduced compared to the weed-free control. PPI and PRE treatments of 70 g ai ha−1imazethapyr did not injure navy bean or reduce yield. Imazethapyr applied POST at 70 g ha−1plus nonionic surfactant visibly injured navy bean. The addition of urea ammonium nitrate to imazethapyr enhanced visible injury and seed moisture compared to nonionic surfactant alone in 1 of 2 yr. However, seed yield was not reduced. Seed moisture at harvest was greater following treatment with 430 g ai ha−1acifluorfen plus nonionic surfactant or urea ammonium nitrate and 140 and 280 g ha−1acifluorfen plus 840 g ai ha−1bentazon in 1 of 2 yr compared to the weed-free control, but yield was not reduced. Wheat yield was reduced in 2 of 2 and 1 of 2 yr by 560 g ha−1and 430 g ha−1clomazone, respectively, plus pendimethalin plus chloramben compared to the weed-free control. Wheat yield was not reduced by imazethapyr, bentazon, or acifluorfen.

A caracterização de riscos climáticos para algumas culturas tem sido feita com modelos de simulação e para a cultura do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) tem-se utilizado o CROPGRO-Dry Bean. Esse modelo calibrado e testado para a região de Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO, foi utilizado na análise de risco climático de quebra relativa de produtividade da cultura naquela região. Para as simulações utilizou-se a série de dados climatológicos (1978 a 1998), as características físicas, químicas e hídricas do solo local (Latossolo Vermelho perférrico), e o módulo "seasonal" do DSSAT 3.5. Foram feitas simulações para a região, a fim de se obter as produtividades potencial (Yp, sem restrição de água no solo) e real (Yr, com restrição dependente das chuvas) da cultivar Carioca. A quebra de rendimento, definida por Q(%) = [1 - (Yr/Yp)].100, foi calculada para cada uma das 36 épocas de semeadura simuladas ao longo do ano, nos 21 anos avaliados, sendo convertidas em freqüência relativa para análise dos resultados. Obteve-se Q > 50% na semeadura da "seca"; Q = 34%, em média, na semeadura das "águas"; e Q > 95%, na semeadura de "inverno". Esses resultados enfatizam a necessidade de irrigação suplementar nas semeaduras da "seca" e das "águas", e durante todo o ciclo, nas semeaduras de "inverno".
