The objectives of this work were the study of the volatile chemical composition of essential oils (EO’s) from Bursera graveolens obtained in the locality of Malagana, municipality of Mahates, Bolívar, Colombia, as well as to evaluate their repellent and fumigant properties. EO’s were extracted by hydro-distillation and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major compounds found in B. graveolens were limonene (42.2%), pulegone (20.9%), carvone (7.5%), caryophyllene (4.1%), and trans-carveol (3.8%). The repellent activity of EO’s was determined by the area preference method, where the EO of B. graveolens presented repellent activity against the Tribolium castaneum weevil at a concentration of 1 at 2% and 4 hours of exposure (88.1 and 88.6% respectively). B. graveolens essential oil was more effective in its fumigant activity with LC50 of 108.2 μg oil mL-1. Also, the fumigant and repellent activities of two individual compounds present in the oil were evaluated, that is, limonene (majority) and caryophyllene. The results indicated that B. graveolens essential oil could be a promising alternative to new natural repellents and biocides.

Tribolium castaneum es una plaga que infesta los productos agrícolas almacenados, principalmente granos. Una alternativa de control son los productos naturales, destacándose los aceites esenciales. Se evaluó la actividad repelente del aceite esencial de Bursera graveolens Jacq. ex L. contra T. castaneum aplicando el método de área de preferencia. Los resultados muestran diferencias significativas (p menor que 0.005) entre el área tratada y no tratada en las dosis 0.02, y 0.2 µL/cm2 luego de dos horas de exposición. Dicha actividad decreció al aumentar el tiempo de exposición. En conclusión, el aceite esencial de B. graveolens podría ser un repelente efectivo contra este insecto plaga. Tribolium castaneum (Herbst, 1797) is a plague that infest store products, mainly grains. One alternative to control it is the use of natural products, highlighting the essential oils. It was evaluated the repellent activity of the essential oil of Bursera graveolens Jacq. ex L. towards T. castaneum. Results shows significant differences (p less than 0.005) between the treated area and the non trated area at 0.02, and 0.2 µL/cm2 doses after two hours of exposition. Repellent activity decreased when the time of exposition increased. In conclusión, the essential oil of B. graveolens could be an effective repellent against plague insects, being also this report the first related to repellency in this plant.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal and repellency activity of the essential oil of Cinnamomum camphora var. linaloolifera Y. Fujita (Ho-Sho) and Cinnamomumcamphora (L.) J Presl.var. hosyo (Hon-Sho), against the Sitophilus zeamais in maize grains. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-MS.The insecticidal activity was determined by the toxicity of different concentrations of essential oils during 24 hours of contact with the insects, in the absence of feed substrate. The Bioassays of repellency were conducted with lethal doses (LD50,LD25,and LD12.5) obtained from insecticidal bioassay. In order to compare the treatments the preference index (PI) was employed. The analysis of the essential oils of Cinnamomum camphora leaves indicated 68% of camphor and 9% of linalool for the variation Hon-Sho and 95% of linalool to the variation Ho-Sho. The variation Ho-Sho presented greatest insecticidal activity than the variation Hon-Sho against the Sitophiluszeamais, with LD50 of 0.35 μL/cm2, whereas in the variation Hon-Sho the ratewas 0.48 μL/cm2. However, considering only the concentrations of linalool and camphor of Ho-Sho and Hon-Sho, the lethal doses’ evaluation of these compounds were similar. The values of the preference index ranged from -0.3 to -0.8 for thevariation Ho-Sho and -0.2 to -0.7 for the variation Hon-Sho. The essential oils evaluated in this work showed repellent activity against Sitophiluszeamais in vitro and in trials performed in mini-silos.
