The synthesis of a series of 13 multifunctionalised dihydroindeno[1,2-b]furans was achieved in a diastereoselective manner in excellent yield by reacting 1,3-indanedione, an aryl glyoxal and a pyridinium ylide in the presence of a nano γ-Fe2O3-quinuclidine-based catalyst in an aqueous medium.
