In situ high pressure energy dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements on layered perovskite-like manganate Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 under pressures up to 35 GPa have been performed by using diamond anvil cell with synchrotron radiation. The results show that the structure of layered perovskite-like manganate Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 is unstable under pressure due to the easy compression of NaCl-type blocks. The structure of Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 underwent two phase transitions under pressures in the range of 0~35 GPa. One was at about 1.3 GPa with the crystal structure changing from tetragonal to orthorhombic. The other was at about 9.5 GPa with the crystal structure changing from orthorhombic back to another tetragonal.

AbstractH2NiTi4O10/TiO2 intercalated compound was fabricated by successive intercalation reactions of H2NiTi4O10 with n-C6H13NH2/C2H5OH mixed solution and acid TiO2 sol, followed by irradiating with a high-pressure mercury lamp. H2NiTi4O10, a layered perovskite type compound with TiO2-loading, exhibited a high activity for decomposition of methyl orange under UV and visible light irradiation. The experimental results showed that methyl orange was degraded with the decomposition ratio of 59.0 % by using H2NiTi4O10/TiO2 as photocatalyst under visible light ( > 420 nm) irradiation for 24 h. The H2NiTi4O10/TiO2 possessed higher photocatalytic activity than those commercial titania powder (Degussa P-25) which showed the decomposition ratio just only 24% under same condition.

We report the high pressure synthesis of a layered perovskite Ca2GeO4 which is found to have the Ruddlesden–Popper structure with I41/acd symmetry, and to display pronounced uniaxial negative thermal expansion.

ABSTRACTHigh pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments were conducted on KCa2Nb3O10, to determine lattice constants as a function of pressure. A diamond anvil cell was used to produce pressures up to 66 GPa. A phase transition occurred at 13.5 GPa. From the lattice constants, linear compressibilities of 8.55 × 10-4 GPa-1 in the a direction, -9.40 × 10-4 GPa-1 in the b direction, and 142 × 10-4 GPa-1 in the c direction, and a bulk modulus of 68.5 GPa were found for the lower pressure orthorhombic phase.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the properties of the La 0.75 Ca 0.25 MnO 3 manganite have been studied by means of spectroscopic techniques. Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of this pseudocubic manganese perovskite have been collected for the first time over a wide pressure range (0–14 GPa) using a diamond anvil cell. Preliminary results have been obtained also in the case of the Sr 1.5 La 0.5 MnO 4 layered perovskite. The Raman measurements allow us to follow the pressure evolution of the phonon spectrum of the MnO 6 octahedron vibrational modes. Through the IR measurements we study the pressure dependence of the high-frequency octahedron stretching mode and of the broad background associated to polaronic absorption. Raman results show an abrupt discontinuity at P *~7.5 GPa in both frequency and width of some of the observed phonons. The infrared absorption measurements shows a remarkable increase of the polaronic absorption which do not completely screen the phonon peak even at the maximum pressure. Our results, which are in agreement with recent high pressure diffraction data, do not support the possibility of obtaining a metallization transition in the La 0.75 Ca 0.25 MnO 3 manganite at high pressure.
