AbstractThe crystal structure and an improved synthesis of 1,3,5-trisilacyclohexane are reported. The solid state structure is compared with the reported structure determined in the gas phase by gas electron diffraction (GED). 1,3,5-Trisilacyclohexane adopts a chair conformation in the solid state. The Si–C bond lengths as well as all angles of 1,3,5-trisilacyclohexane in the solid state have similar dimensions compared to the structure in the gaseous phase.

MgSiO3tetragonal garnet, which is the last of the missing phases of experimentally predicted high-pressure polymorphs of pyroxene, has been discovered in a shocked meteorite. The garnet is formed from low-Ca pyroxene in the host rock through a solid-state transformation at 17 to 20 GPa and 1900° to 2000°C. On the basis of the degree of cation ordering in its crystal structure, which can be deduced from electron diffraction intensities, the cooling rate of the shock-induced melt veins from ~2000°C was estimated to be higher than 103°C/s. This cooling rate sets the upper bound for the shock-temperature increase in the bulk meteorite at ~900°C.

New phosphates Ca9–xPbxEu(PO4)7 were obtained by solid state reaction techniques at 1213–1253 K in air atmosphere and were found to be isotypic with whitlockite-type β-Ca3(PO4)2. The unit cell parameters were determinate using Le Bail decomposition. Rietveld method structural refining showed that Eu3+ ions are located statistically with calcium in M1, M2, and M3 sites, whereas Pb2+-ions are preferentially located in the M3. Examination of optical second harmonic generation evidences nonlinear optical activity and confirms polar space group R3c.

A new organic nonlinear optical material isonicotinamidium picrate, with excellent nonlinear optical activity and thermal stability has been reported.

Outgrowths formed on haematite single crystals by heating in air have been examined by electron diffraction. At 500°C a change occurs in their crystal structure, apparently due to the migration of some cations to tetrahedral interstices. Otherwise, the unit cell and oxygen-ion framework of this 'β -phase’ remain as in α -Fe 2 O 3 (haematite). At 700°C the structure of the outgrowths changes to one characteristic of γ -Fe 2 O 3 and persists as such, even after prolonged heating at 900°C. Thus the transformation γ -Fe 2 O 3 to α -Fe 2 O 3 is not, as has been supposed, strictly irreversible, since the α-γ transition has now been found to occur under suitable conditions. The presence of β -phase traces seems to be the cause of the anomalous magnetic behaviour of haematite observed by Néel and others. It is concluded that the α-γ transformation is a necessary step preceding the solid-state spinelization reaction involved in the formation of a ferrospinel.
