A model for linear and nonlinear optical properties of a composite material consisting of spheroidal metal inclusions embedded in a host medium has been formulated using an effective medium approach. Both aligned and randomly oriented spheroids have been considered, and the results obtained showed a considerable difference between the two situations. Numerical calculations for metallic Au inclusions in a glass matrix have shown that the linear absorption in the case of aligned spheroids with their symmetry axis parallel to the z-axis is largely dependent on the depolarization factor, exhibiting an absorption in the vicinity of 500 nm when the depolarization factor in the direction parallel to the rotational symmetry axis is small. This structure shifts progressively to higher wavelengths when this depolarization factor is increased. In the case of randomly oriented spheroids, contributions from the different particle depolarization factors are present and prominent structures in the linear absorption appear in the long wavelength region, beyond 700 nm. Nonlinear optical properties for both aligned and randomly oriented spheroids also show a strong dependence on the depolarization factor and significant enhancements of these properties can be observed, suggesting possible tailoring of composite properties for various applications.

The Eu

Europium doped Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were prepared by Sol-Gel technique under varying condition to investigate the effects of Eu3 + doping on the optical properties of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The transmittance spectrum is clearly visible at wavelengths 394nm and 416nm, and is a result of electronic transitions of energy level of the Eu3 + ions. . The obtained composites for different doping concentration were analyzed by using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The linear and nonlinear optical properties of the composite were studied using the Z-scan technique, and there was an increase in the nonlinear refractive index with an increase in the concentration of the Eu+3, where it reached its highest value, which is 3.01×10-10 at doping 2.3 while the linear absorption coefficient was an inverse proportion, where the highest value was at Pure titanium and it is 1.0296951×10-5 (cm/mw).

The linear absorption spectra and third-order nonlinear optical properties of M@ C 82 (M = Sc , Y , La ) nanostructural materials, whose configurations were optimized at the unrestricted open shell UB3LYP level, are simulated by the sum-over-states combined with the time-dependent UB3LYP methods. The obtained results show that the electronic absorption bands have redshifts, and the values of third-order nonlinear optical polarizabilities and two-photon absorption cross sections increase for M@ C 82 fullerenes (M = Sc , Y , La ) as the atomic radius of encased metal M increase in the order of Sc → Y → La . It is indicated that the electron-donating ability from the encased M atom to cage C 82 decreases or the electron-accepting ability from C 82 to M atom increases as the atomic radius of M increases, which results in third-order nonlinear optical response enhancement in the order of Sc @ C 82 < Y @ C 82 < La @ C 82. This gives a clue to design the nanostructural materials of encased fullerenes having a large nonlinear optical response.

AbstractThe linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of Sb nanometer dimension metal colloids in silica were measured. The colloids were fabricated by the implantation of Sb in silica with nominal doses of 3, 6 and 9x1016 ions/cm2 at 320 keV. The linear optical response was measured from 200 to 900 nm. The nonlinear optical properties were measured using the z-scan technique at wavelengths of 596 and 617 nm. The results are compared to linear and nonlinear properties of a sample implanted with 6x1016 Ag ions/cm 2. Both absorption and the nonlinear index of refraction increase with increasing volume fraction for the Sb implanted samples. The lower linear absorption and comparable nonlinear index of refraction for the Sb colloid-glass composites may be better for devices than composites using metal colloids that have a surface plasmon resonance.

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of pure 3,3'-bis(3-carboxypropyl)-5,5',6,6'- tetrachloro-1,1'-dioctylbenzimidacarbocyanine (C8O3) aggregates as well as of C8O3 aggregates in the presence of PVA are studied at room temperature. The obtained results reveal that absorption spectra of both aggregates are governed by four absorption bands. Three of these represent transitions having dipole moments oriented parallel to the axis of the aggregate and one oriented perpendicular to it. The two lower energy parallel transitions are found to be weakly coupled which suggests that they represent two excitons located on different walls of the double-wall cylinder. In contrast, the lowest energy parallel transition and the transition having a transition dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the aggregate axis share the same ground state which reveals that they belong to the same exciton band. The manner of modification of the linear absorption with addition of PVA as well as the similarity of the pump-probe spectra of the two investigated aggregates suggests that this exciton band originates from the inner wall of the double-wall cylinder.

Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots

We synthesis different sizes of cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) and their linear and nonlinear optical properties. Size-controlled CdSe QDs are characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorption, photoluminescence, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Z-scan techniques. Redshift was observed in the linear absorption and photoluminescence with an increase in the size of CdSe QDs. TEM images show the sizes of the QDs are 2.2 nm–4.9 nm. Bandgap tuning CdSe QDs of third-order nonlinear optical properties are investigated at 532 nm with an open aperture Z-scan technique using a picosecond laser. These CdSe QDs can be used as optical limiters.
