Oxide-based hetero-structures are promising candidates for building the next generation of functional devices. In order to achieve this goal, it is required to have solid and reliable sensors for monitoring the growth of thin films with single-atomic-layer sensitivity. So far, the most popular in-situ diagnostic tool is Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction, which provides information on the structural properties of the growing films, and not a direct access to the desired interfacial physical properties of interest. Furthermore, it needs a strong human-machine interaction, preventing its use into industrial mass production. Standard optics applied on buried interfaces suffers the disadvantage to have a probing depth which is orders of magnitude larger than the interface layer. Here we propose to overcome this problem by resorting to optical Second Harmonic Generation and we present some example to show the potential of this technique as a real-time monitor system for thin-film crystal growth.

ABSTRACTThe dynamics of the gas phase photopolymerization of acrolein on aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), and gold (Au) substrates were studied in-situ and in real time using surface second harmonic generation (SSHG) and monitoring vapor pressure decay. The Al and Ni substrates had a significant effect on the apparent rate of polymerization. A dark reaction after irradiation occurred in the absence of metal (Al or Ni) substrates, but no dark reaction was observed when the metal substrates were present. The significant differences in the metal/monomer interactions during photopolymerization are indicated by SEMs of the polyacrolein, as well as evidence from FTIR-ATR spectra. The SSHG intensities from the Au, Al, and polyacrolein surfaces were obtained.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) was used to carry out an in situ study of the potential-induced reconstruction of an Au(110) single crystal electrode in an aqueous solution of 0.01 M HClO4. In this study, we found that the symmetries of the surface susceptibility of the reconstructed and the unreconstructed Au(110) surfaces have a large component of threefold symmetry. A detailed analysis shows that both surfaces have an overall Cs symmetry giving one-, two-, and threefold symmetries for the surface susceptibility. However, another, different, source of threefold symmetry, perpendicular to the first, is needed to fit the data. We suggest that this extra source of threefold symmetry is due to the (111) microfacets that are present on the open (110) surface.
