Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were prepared on photocatalytic TiO2-coated glass substrate by a photodeposition process and the optical hydrogen sensing properties were examined at room temperature. The TiO2 coatings were prepared on a non-alkaline glass substrate by a sol-gel process and hot water treatment. Pd nanoparticles were deposited on the TiO2 film by photodeposition using UV light. The obtained Pd/TiO2 thin film showed remarkable optical transmittance response to hydrogen gas at room temperature. The normalized transmittance of the Pd/TiO2 thin film at a wavelength of 640 nm decreased to 0.9 on exposing the film to hydrogen gas for only 5 s. This transmittance decrease is considered to be due to a gaschromic effect of the TiO2 photocatalytic coating.

Palladium-coated multi-walled carbon nanotube (Pd-MWCNT) nanocomposites have been experimentally proven to show highly improved hydrogen (H2) gas detection characteristics at room temperature when compared with single MWCNTs. In this context, we develop an efficient and convenient method for forming nanocomposites by coating Pd nanoparticles on an MWCNT film. Furthermore, we test the applicability of the nanocomposites as sensing materials in detecting H2 gas at room temperature in a reliable and sensitive manner in contrast with ordinary metal-oxidebased gas sensors that operate at high temperatures. We first study the detection efficacy of the Pd-MWCNT film relative to pure MWCNT film. Subsequently, we investigate the Pd-MWCNT sensor’s sensitivity over time for different gas concentrations, the sensor response time, and sensor reproducibility and reliability under various conditions including bending tests. Our sensor exhibits stable reliable detection characteristics and excellent structural flexibility.

A novel method has been introduced for rapid reduction of alkenes and alkynes, which may be attractive for chemical industries. This method has some advantages such as simplicity and low cost of reactants. Pd supported on sulfonated porous carbon (SPC) was used as a new catalyst for reduction of alkenes and alkynes to the corresponding alkanes using sodium borohydride. The heterogeneous reaction was conducted in open air at room temperature to produce the desired saturated compounds in high yields (over 96%) and in short reaction time (15 minutes).
