Liquid ammonia is a useful solvent for the reaction of various alkyl halides with sodium dialkyl phosphonates. In this medium ethyl bromide, amyl bromide, octyl bromide, ally1 chloride, and benzyl chloride give the corresponding dialkyl alkylphosphonates in good yield. In other cases, alternative products are formed. Thus sodium diethyl phosphonate reacts with carbon tetrachloride or chloroform in liquid ammonia to give diethyl phosphoramidate; dibromomethane gives diethyl methylphosphonate and an equivalent quantity of diethyl phosphoramidate. p-Nitrobenzyl bromide gives mainly 1,2-di(p-nitrophenyl)ethane, 1-bromooct-1-yne is reduced to oct-1-yne, and 3-bromoprop-1-yne gives mainly propyne together with some diethyl prop-l- ynylphosphonate.

Sodium dimethylbismuthide, generated from dimethylbismuth bromide and sodium in liquid ammonia, was treated with alkyl halides to produce dimethylalkylbismuthanes, Me2Bi(alk) (alk = C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, C3H5, i-C3H7) as thermolabile liquids in yields ranging from 70 to 90%. With methylene chloride bis(dimethylbismutho)methane, (Me2Bi)2CH2, was obtained. Aryldimethylbismuthanes, (aryl)BiMe2, were prepared by treating dimethylbismuth bromide in THF with elemental lithium (-78 °C) and subsequent reaction with aryl halides (aryl = 4-C6H4CH3, 4-C6H4OCH3, 2,4,6-C6H2(CH3)3). At 90 °C in an N2-stream, the thermolabile compounds react quantitatively to form diarylmethylbismuthanes, (aryl)2BiMe and Me3Bi.

The reaction of C6H5(CH3)PNa with some alkyl halides in liquid ammonia was studied. The resulting phosphines were characterized by elemental analyses, NMR spectra, and by the reaction with trimethylsilyl azide giving trimethylsilylimino triorganophosphoranes.
