The fractionation efficiency of hollow fiber membranes (HFM) for milk protein fractionation was compared to ceramic tubular membranes (CTM) and spiral wound membranes (SWM). HFM combine the features of high membrane packing density of SWM and the more defined flow conditions and better control of membrane fouling in the open flow channel cross-sections of CTM. The aim was to comparatively analyze the effect of variations in local pressure and flow conditions while using single industrially sized standard modules with similar dimensions and module footprints (module diameter and length). The comparative assessment with varied transmembrane pressure was first applied for a constant feed volume flow rate of 20 m3 h−1 and, secondly, with the same axial pressure drop along the modules of 1.3 bar m−1, similar to commonly applied crossflow velocity and wall shear stress conditions at the industrial level. Flux, transmission factor of proteins (whey proteins and serum caseins), and specific protein mass flow per area membrane and per volume of module installed were determined as the evaluation criteria. The casein-to-whey protein ratios were calculated as a measure for protein fractionation effect. Results obtained show that HFM, which so far are under-represented as standard module types in industrial dairy applications, appear to be a competitive alternative to SWM and CTM for milk protein fractionation.

Disparities between the races have been well documented in health and disease in the USA. Recent studies show that telomere length, a marker of aging, is associated with obesity and obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. The current study aimed to evaluate the connection between telomere length ratio, blood pressure, and childhood obesity. The telomere length ratio was measured in 127 children from both European American (EA) and African American (AA) children, aged 6–10 years old. AA children had a significantly high relative telomere to the single copy gene (T/S) ratio compared to EA children. There was no significant difference in the T/S ratio between normal weight (NW) and overweight/obese (OW/OB) groups of either race. Blood pressure was significantly elevated in AA children with respect to EA children. Hierarchical regression analysis adjusted for race, gender, and age expressed a significant relationship between the T/S ratio and diastolic pressure. Low T/S ratio participants showed a significant increase in systolic pressure, while a high T/S ratio group showed an increase in diastolic pressure and heart rate of AA children. In conclusion, our findings show that AA children have high T/S ratio compared to EA children. The high T/S ratio is negatively associated with diastolic pressure.

Mandibular prognathism causes functional and esthetic problems. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to understand its etiology. Following our previous study, which revealed that the major characteristic of the mandible with prognathism is the volume/length ratio of the mandibular body and condyle, we analyzed the volume and orientation of the masseter muscle, which inserts into the mandibular body, expecting that the difference in the size of the masseter muscle causes the difference in the mandibular size. This study compared the masseter muscle of the participants in the prognathic group to those in the normal group on the volume/length ratio and orientation. The masseter muscle ratios (volume/length); the angle between the superficial and deep head of the masseter muscle; and the three planes (the palatal, occlusal, and mandibular) were analyzed. A total of 30 participants constituted the normal group (male: 15, female: 15) and 30 patients, the prognathic group (male: 15, female: 15). The results showed that the volume/length ratio of the masseter of the normal group was greater than that of the prognathic group (p < 0.05). In addition, the orientation of both the superficial and deep head of the masseter of the participants in the normal group was more vertical with respect to the mandibular plane than that of the prognathic group (p < 0.05). We concluded that the mechanical disadvantage of the masseter muscle of the prognathic group is attributed to mandibular prognathism.
