The influence of utilizing different nanofluids types on the liquid cold plate (LCP) is numerically investigated. The thermal and fluid flow performance of LCP is examined by using pure ethylene glycol (EG), Al2O3-EG and CuO-EG. The volume fraction of the nanoparticle for both nanofluid is 2%. The finite volume method (FVM) has been used to solved 3-D steady state, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations. The presented results indicate that Al2O3-EG able to provide the lowest surface temperature of the heater block followed by CuO-EG and EG, respectively. It is also found that the pressure drop and friction factor are higher for Al2O3-EG and CuO-EG compared to the pure EG.

This work presents a post-processing tool for the verification of steady-state fluid flow and heat transfer finite volume computations. It is based both on the generalized Richardson extrapolation and the Grid Convergence Index GCI. The observed order of accuracy and a error band where the grid independent solution is expected to be contained are estimated. The results corresponding to the following two and three-dimensional steady-state simulations are post-processed: a flow inside a cavity with moving top wall, an axisymmetric turbulent flow through a compressor valve, a premixed methane/air laminar flat flame on a perforated burner, and the heat transfer from an isothermal cylinder enclosed by a square duct. Discussion is carried out about the certainty of the estimators obtained with the post-processing procedure. They have been shown to be useful parameters in order to assess credibility and quality to the reported numerical solutions.

A classical problem in free-surface hydrodynamics concerns flow in a channel, when an obstacle is placed on the bottom. Steady-state flows exist and may adopt one of three possible configurations, depending on the fluid speed and the obstacle height; perhaps the best known has an apparently uniform flow upstream of the obstacle, followed by a semiinfinite train of downstream gravity waves. When time-dependent behaviour is taken into account, it is found that conditions upstream of the obstacle are more complicated, however, and can include a train of upstream-advancing solitons. This paper gives a critical overview of these concepts, and also presents a new semianalytical spectral method for the numerical description of unsteady behaviour. doi:10.1017/S1446181121000341

Piping systems transporting fluid between plant components are subjected to a variety of anticipated and/or postulated flow changes that disturb their steady state operations. These changes cause the fluid flow to accelerate and/or decelerate. However, consideration of fluid elasticity transforms these disturbances into weak and/or strong propagating sound waves, depending upon the abruptness level of the fluid state change. This generates dynamic forces on the pipe segments of the piping system. A simple concept for understanding the piping fluid transient phenomenon from its physical perspective is presented. The piping system consists of several pipe segments, each segment having a constant cross-sectional flow area. The pipe segment is further divided into a consecutive series of zones. Each zone comprises two or three sub-zones of quasi steady state flow. The sub-zones are separated by interface fronts at which the jump in fluid pressure and velocity occurs across them. These fronts propagate and clash with each other to create the next temporal set of sub-zones quasi steady state flow. This method is denoted in this paper as steady state flow fronts clashing ‘SSFFC’. Clashing between the incident, transmitted and/or reflected wave fronts within the zone is introduced. As a precursor to the second part of a two-part publication, the SSFFC is physically illustrated and mathematically formulated to establish the temporal fluid steady state contained within each sub-zone constituting the pipe segment. The developed formulations are comparable to those instituted by the conventional method of characteristics. The pipe segment generalized fluid flow transient forces based on SSFFC methodology are also formulated. In the concurrent publication that forms part two of this presentation [8], sample applications of SSFFC methodology are illustrated.

Abstract The log-aesthetic curve (LAC) is a family of aesthetic curves with linear logarithmic curvature graphs (LCGs). It encompasses well-known aesthetic curves such as clothoid, logarithmic spiral, and circle involute. LAC has been playing a pivotal role in aesthetic design. However, its application for functional design is an uncharted territory, e.g. the relationship between LAC and fluid flow patterns may aid in designing better ship hulls and breakwaters. We address this problem by elucidating the relationship between LAC and flow patterns in terms of streamlines at a steady state. We discussed how LAC pathlines form under the influence of pressure gradient via Euler's equation and how LAC streamlines are formed in a special case. LCG gradient ($\alpha $) for implicit and explicit functions is derived, and it is proven that the LCG gradient at the inflection points of explicit functions is always 0 when its third derivative is nonzero. Due to the complexity of the parametric representation of LAC, it is almost impossible to derive the general representation of LAC streamlines. We address this by analyzing the streamlines formed by incompressible flow around an airfoil-like obstacle generated with LAC having various shapes, ${\alpha _r} = \ \{ { - 20,{\rm{\ }} - 5,{\rm{\ }} - 1,{\rm{\ }} - 0.5,{\rm{\ }} - 0.15,{\rm{\ }}0,{\rm{\ }}1,{\rm{\ }}2,{\rm{\ }}3,{\rm{\ }}4,{\rm{\ }}20} \}$, and simulating the streamlines using FreeFem++ reaching a steady state. We found that the LCG gradient of the resultant streamlines is close to that of a clothoid. When the obstacle shape is almost the same as that of a circle ($\alpha \ = \ 20$), the streamlines adjacent to the obstacles have numerous curvature extrema despite nearing steady state. The flow speed variation is the lowest for $\alpha \ = \ - 1.43$ and gets higher as $\alpha$ is increased or decreased from $\alpha \ = \ - 1.43$.
