Chlorination of 4-chloro-2-methyl-6-nitrophenol (4) with chlorine in acetic acid containing concentrated hydrochloric acid gives the epimeric acyclic carboxylic acids (6) and (7). The structure of compound (6) was determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. No such acyclic compounds are formed in similar chlorinations of 2,4-dichloro-6-nitrophenol (13a) or 2,4-dichloro-6-methylphenol (13b). The mode of formation of compounds (6) and (7) is discussed.

The crystal structure of the bismuth(III) complex with (+)-tartaric acid, ammonium aquabis [(+)-tartrato (2-)] bismuthate (III) hydrate, has been determined by X-ray methods and refined to a residual R 0.020 for 1288 observed reflections. Crystals are orthorhombic, space group P 212121 with Z 4 in a cell of dimensions a 7.4712(4), b 10.856(1), c 17.609(3) . Each nine-coordinate MO9 bismuth centre comprises three bidentate α-hydroxy carboxy residues from two tartrato (2-) ligands (with one bridging), an asymmetric bidentate carboxylato (O,O') group, and a water. The Bi-O range is 2.372(7)-2.738(6) [mean 2.509(6) > ]. The resultant structure is a linear polymer which is stabilized by extensive hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Cardinalic acid (1,7,8-trihydroxy-6-methoxy-3-methyl-9,10-dioxoanthracene-2-carboxylic acid) (4) and the known anthraquinone carboxylic acids endocrocin (1), dermolutein (2) and cinnalutein (3) have been isolated from the New Zealand toadstool Dermocybe cardinalis. Methyl 1,7,8-tri-O-methylcardinalate (5) has been prepared both by permethylation of the natural product (4) and from 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone by two consecutive regioselective Diels–Alder cycloaddition reactions. A single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of the ester (5) corroborates the structure of the natural product (4) and confirms the outcome of both cycloaddition reactions.

Various salts M(AuX4)2 with X = OCOCH3 or OCOC2H5 have been prepared by two methods: (i) the reaction of metal hydroxides M(OH)2 with HAuCl4, followed by treatment of the intermediate products with acetic or propionic acid, or (ii) the reaction of aurates M{Au(OH)4}2 with the carboxylic acids. The crystal structure of Pb{Au(OCOCH3)4}2·2H2O shows that it is isostructural to the strontium salt, consisting of molecular units Pb{Au(OCOCH3)4}2 with crystallographic symmetry 2. The water of crystallization forms neither coordinate bonds to a metal nor hydrogen bonds. In the analogous zinc salt the water is coordinated to the zinc atom, and the structure is a layer polymer. The two compounds that crystallize in anhydrous form. Ba{Au(OCOCH3)4}2 and Pb{Au(OCOC2H5)4}2, have not yet yielded crystals suitable for X-ray analysis.
