AbstractOrganic electrodes are promising as next generation energy storage materials originating from their enormous chemical diversity and electrochemical specificity. Although organic synthesis methods have been extended to a broad range, facile and selective methods are still needed to expose the corners of chemical space. Herein, we report the organopolysulfide, 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)tetrasulfide, which is synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of diphenyl dithiophosphinic acid featuring the cleavage of a P–S single bond and a sulfur radical addition reaction. Density functional theory proves that the external electric field triggers the intramolecular rearrangement of diphenyl dithiophosphinic acid through dehydrogenation and sulfur migration along the P–S bond axis. Impressively, the Li/bis(diphenylphosphanyl)tetrasulfide cell exhibits the high discharge voltage of 2.9 V and stable cycling performance of 500 cycles with the capacity retention of 74.8%. Detailed characterizations confirm the reversible lithiation/delithiation process. This work demonstrates that electrochemical synthesis offers the approach for the preparation of advanced functional materials.

Lanthanide ions are very efficient activators. Due to the presence of shielded 4f shell, the energy levels can be predicted with relative ease. Interaction with the surrounding lattice is minimum and luminescence efficiency is high. For this reason, many important phosphors having various applications have been discovered which use lanthanide activators. For obtaining efficient phosphors, it is important to find a suitable host for lanthanide activators which can accommodate these ions without concentration quenching. The hosts must be transparent to the emitted light. Lanthanides, most commonly occur as trivalent. Thus, hosts constituted by trivalent metals can be suitable. Yttrium compounds have been extensively studied as hosts. Scandium is another trivalent metal. Compared to the yttrium compounds, Scandium compounds have been very scarcely studied as hosts. We are investigating Scandium compounds as luminescence hosts. Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of Sr9 Sc (PO4)7 : Eu3+ and Sr8MgSc(PO4)7:Eu3+ phosphor are described in this work. The phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. Usually, these phosphors are reduced and results on Eu2+ photoluminescence are reported. However, we have recorded photoluminescence before reduction and thus new results on Eu3+ emission could be obtained.

In this study, new mixed ligand complexes have been prepared from bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid (C16H35PS2) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (C14H12N2) with various metal(II) ions. The molecular formula of the metal complexes were [Mn(C16H34PS2)(C14H12N2)]Cl (1), [Fe(C16H34PS2)(C14H12N2)]Cl (2), [Co(C16H34PS2) (C14H12N2)]Cl (3), [Zn(C16H34PS2)(C14H12N2)]Cl (4) and [Cd(C16H34PS2)(C14H12N2)]Cl (5). These complexes have been characterized by various physico-chemical techniques such as melting point, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as UV-Vis, IR, TG and mass spectroscopic analyses. The surface morphology was determined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The magnetic moment value, color as well as spectral measurements suggested that the geometrical structures of the metal complexes were tetrahedral. The spectral data showed that bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands  acted as uninegative and neutral bidentate ligand, respectively. The obtained mixed ligand complexes were more stable in air and highly soluble in common organic solvent. The bio-efficacy of ligands and metal complexes have been screened against the test microorganism using agar disc diffusion method. The complex 4 showed potential antibacterial activity against Sterptococcus aureus as compared to standard drug, imipenem. On the other hand, the complex 3 also displayed more potent antifungal activity against Lecanicillium fungicola. Moreover, the complex 3 was also found to have better scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl.

New metal complexes of Mg(II), VO(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) with cyanex 301(L) i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid were synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, molecular mass determination, magnetic measurements, infrared and electronic spectral studies. The prepared metal complexes have the compositions: 2. [MgL2].H2O, 3. [VOL2], 4. K[MnL3].H2O, 5. [FeL3], 6. K[CoL3].H2O, 7. K[NiL3], 8. K[CuL3] and 9. [PdL2]. The complexes 2, 3 and 9 are assumed to have tetrahedral, square pyramidal and square planar geometries, respectively but the complexes 4 - 8 are octahedral based on experimental data. From magnetic measurements the complexes 2 and 9 are found to be diamagnetic and others are paramagnetic. Measured molar conductance showed that the complexes 2, 3, 5 and 9 are non-electrolytes and rest are electrolytes. Besides, some complexes have shown good antibacterial and antifungal activities.
