This paper proposes the use of non-uniform extended surfaces installed externally to the tubes of the radiation section of fired heaters, in order to obtain a better heat flux distribution to the coils. To this end, the heat transfer mechanisms present in such equipment were studied through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), using simplified geometries that represent typical sizes of fired heaters. Also, a simplified model for the combustion was considered. Although this model oversimplifies the physics of the problem, it was able to give satisfactory results for the parameters being optimized, considering the main objective of this paper, that is to minimize the non-uniformity of heat flux in the tubes of the radiant section of fired heaters. It was possible to obtain optimized geometric parameters for different types of extended surfaces evaluated, coupling the results of these models with the Particle Swarm optimization method through the use of a response surface technique,. The results indicate a significant improvement in the uniformity of the heat flux distribution to the tubes through the use of the proposed extended surfaces. Thus, this solution reveals to be an interesting alternative to reduce the risks of fluid degradation and coking formation. Future studies must investigate the non-uniformity of the heat flux due to the presence of the flame and consider the interaction between the reactive flow and the participating medium. Nevertheless, this paper presents some results that justify the optimization of such extended surfaces taking into consideration thermal radiation.

The technological innovation in the field of lighting and the need to reduce energy consumption connected to public lighting are leading many municipalities to undertake the renewal of public lighting systems, by replacing the existing luminaires with LED technologies. This renovation process is usually aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing maintenance costs, whist improving the lighting performance. To achieve these results, the new luminaires are often characterised by a luminous flux distribution much more downward oriented, which may remarkably influence and alter the perception of the night image of the sites. In this study the implications of the renovation of public lighting systems in terms of lighting and energy performance as well as the effects relating to the alteration of the night image, in historical contexts characterized by significant landscape value, are analysed. Results, along with demonstrating the positive effect that more sustainable and energy efficient lighting systems may have on the lighting performance and energy consumptions of public lighting systems, evidences the impact they may have on the alteration of the nocturnal image.

Increased computational capabilities make available for the aero/thermal designers new powerful tools to include more geometrical details, improving the accuracy of the simulations, and reducing design costs and time. In the present work, a low-pressure turbine was analyzed, modeling the rotor-stator including the wheel space region. Attention was focused on the interaction between the coolant and the main flow in order to obtain a more detailed understanding of the behavior of the angel wings, to evaluate the wall heat flux distribution, and to prevent hot gas ingestion. Issues of component reliability related to thermal stress require accurate modeling of the turbulence and unsteadiness of the flow field. To satisfy this accuracy requirement, a full 3D URANS simulation was carried out. A reduced count ratio technique was applied in order to decrease numerical simulation costs. The study was carried out to investigate a new two-stage Low Pressure Turbine from GE Infrastructure Oil&Gas to be coupled to a new aeroderivative gas generator, the LM2500+G4, developed by GE Infrastructure, Aviation.
