Batch isotherm studies using spiked sewage samples containing a range of total soluble nickel concentrations typical of municipal sewage strongly suggested that it is the free (i.e. uncomplexed) nickel ion that is sorbed by activated sludge. Equations relating nickel uptake by activated sludge to free nickel ion concentrations and the extent of complexation in untreated sewage were developed and applied. Predicted and measured nickel removals generally agreed to within ± 30%.

In this research, composites of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with three Jordanian natural raw materials; Tripoli (T), Pozzolana (P) and Feldspar (F) were prepared by co-precipitation and have been used for feed seawater pre-treatment. The data reveals that percent adsorption decreased with increase in initial concentration, but the actual amount of adsorbed ions per unit mass of LDH/T-P-F increased with increase in metal ion concentrations. The values of ?Go were negative and within 21 to 26 KJ/mol, while the values of ?Ho and ?So were positive and within the range of 0.1 to 25 KJ/mol. The values of ?H?, ?S?, and ?G? indicate the favorability of physisorption and show that the LDH/T-P-F composites have a considerable potential as adsorbents for the removal of ions from seawater.

The application of voltammetric methods using different rates of polarisation on HMDE reveal inert or labile behaviour of Cd- or Zn- complexes in the presence of excessive cadmium or zinc ions in solution. This phenomenon was demonstrated first on the simplest phytochelatin – complex of peptide(γ-Glu-Cys)2Glywith cadmium, later on rabbit liver metallothioneins –Cd7MTin the presence of cadmium andCd5Zn2MTin the presence of zinc. Voltammetric methods can distinguish between labile and inert complexes present simultaneously and therefore could elucidate their role in reactions of metal ion transfer.Another method using different rates of polarisation – elimination voltammetry with linear scan – proved that S-tetracoordinated complexes of Cd(II) or Zn(II) in the above-mentioned metallothioneins on HMDE are reduced in the adsorbed state. This implies the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of identification or determination of the above complexes. On carbon composite electrode, similar behaviour of Cd-complexes as on HMDE was observed using differential pulse voltammetry.

In the present study, we have used the waste leaves of Myrica esculenta for the removal of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions from the synthetically prepared waste water. The adsorption based removal process has been carried out under the batch system. The batch system was included pH, contact time, dosage, concentration and temperature. The maximum removal efficiency was achieved at optimized conditions i.e. higher contact time, higher pH, lower metal ion concentrations and moderate temperatures. The presence of various organic binding groups was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The percentage adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions was found 97.02%, 92.52% and 81.99% at pH 6 after contact time 25 minutes. The data of adsorption were tested with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The adsorption capacity of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+ ions was evaluated as 8.264, 5.617 and 7.751mgg-1 by Langmuir isotherm model.
