New process concepts in energy production and biofuel, which are much more reactive than coal, call for better controllability of the combustion in circulating fluidized bed boilers. Simplified analysis describing the dynamics of combustion in fluidized bed and circulating fluidized bed boilers is presented. Simple formulas for the estimation of the responses of the burning rate and fuel inventory to changes in fuel feeding are presented. Different changes in the fuel feed, such as an impulse, step change, linear increase and cyclic variation are considered. The dynamics of the burning with a change in the feed rate depends on the fuel reactivity and particle size. The response of a fuel mixture with a wide particle size distribution can be found by summing up the effect of different fuel components and size fractions. Methods to extract reaction parameters form dynamic tests in laboratory scale reactors are discussed. The residence time of fuel particles in the bed and the resulting char inventory in the bed decrease with increasing fuel reactivity and differences between coal and biomass is studied. The char inventory affects the stability of combustion. The effect of char inventory and oscillations in the fuel feed on the oscillation of the flue gas oxygen concentration is studied by model calculation. A trend found by earlier measurements is explained by the model.

The paper gives a review of the most important results of extensive targeted fundamental research program on fluidized bed combustion in the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy of the VINCA Institute of Nuclear Sciences. The paper presents a detailed overview of research activities from the beginning in the second half of the 1970'' up to present days. Starting with the motives for initiating the investigations in this field, the paper highlights various phases of research and points out the main results of all research activities, not only the ones that are focused in this paper. Targeted fundamental research topics that are overviewed in this paper are heat and mass transfer, coal particle fragmentation, char particle combustion, sulfur self-retention by coal ash itself, as well as circulating fluidized bed modeling.

In China, there are a large number of pulverized coal-fired industrial boilers, whose steam capacities are usually relatively small. These boilers can burn only high-grade coal and have low combustion efficiency. Furthermore, the combustion emissions, such as SO2 and NOx, pollute the environment severely. Therefore it is very important and urgent to adopt economically efficient and environmentally friendly technologies to retrofit these boilers. At the same time, there are many industrial wastes, such as bagasse, wood waste, rubbish, petroleum coke and so on, need burning disposal in China. Fluidized bed combustion technology is a kind of clear combustion technology, which has many advantages, such as excellence fuel flexibility, high combustion efficiency, low pollutant emission and good turndown capability etc. So, adopting fluidized bed combustion technology, retrofitting pulverized coal-fired boiler into fluidized bed boiler can realize pure burning various wastes or co-firing with coal, which should have great economic benefits and social benefits. And the application prospect of the method is also extensive. The State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion has successfully retrofitted a 25t/h pulverized coal-fired boiler into circulating fluidized bed boiler with in-bed tubes and downward exhaust cyclone. The retrofitted boiler can burn mixture of coal and bagasse and the steam capacity reaches 35t/h. This paper presents the retrofitting measures and the operation status of the boiler after retrofitting.
