Abstract This paper discusses a method for optimizing production facilities design for onshore/offshore wells during new field development. Optimizing the development of new oil and gas fields necessitates the use of accurate predication techniques to minimize uncertainties associated with day-to-day operational challenges related to wells, pipelines and surface facilities. It involves the use of a transient multiphase flow simulator (TMFS) for designing new oil and gas production systems to determine the feasibility of its economic development. A synthetic offshore oil field that covers a wide range of subsurface and surface facility data is considered in this paper. 32 wells and two reservoirs are considered to evaluate the effect of varying sizes of tubing, wellhead choke, flowline, riser, and transport line. A detailed investigation of the scenario of emergency shutdowns to study its effect on the system is performed using TMFS. Other scenarios are also evaluated such as startup, depressurization, pigging, wax deposition, and hydrate formation. This paper provides a method to minimize the cost by selecting the optimum pipelines sizes and diameters, and investigating the requirements of insulation, risk of pipeline corrosions and other related flow assurance parameters. Different facility design scenarios are considered using TMFS tool to achieve operational flexibility and eliminate associated risks. Pressure and temperature conditions are evaluated under several parametric scenarios to determine the best dimensions of the production system. This paper will also provide insight into factors affecting the flow assurance of oil and gas reservoirs.

In a steel-refining ladle, the properties of manufactured steel can be notably degraded due to the presence of excessive inclusions. Stirring via gas injection through a porous plug is often used as part of the steel-refining process to reduce these inclusions. In this paper, 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used to analyze transient multiphase flow and inclusion removal in a gas-stirred ladle. The effects of gas stirring with bubble-inclusion interaction are analyzed using the Euler–Euler approach for multiphase flow modeling, while the effects of inclusions aggregation and removal are modeled via a population balance model (PBM).

Abstract The unconventional resources development has grown tremendously as a result of the advancement in horizontal drilling technology coupled with hydraulic fracturing. However, as more wells are drilled and fractured close to each other, frac hits have become a major challenge in these wells. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of nitrogen injection flow rate and pressure on unloading frac hits gas wells in transient multiphase flow. A numerical simulation model was created using a transient multiphase flow simulator to mimic the unloading process of frac hits by injecting nitrogen from the surface through the annulus section of the well. Many simulation cases were created and analyzed to comprehend the effect of the nitrogen injection rate and pressure on the unloading of frac hits. The model mimicked real field data from currently active well in the Eagle Ford Shale. The results showed that as the nitrogen injection pressure increases, the nitrogen volume and the time to unload the frac hits decrease. On the other hand, increasing the injection rate of nitrogen will increase the nitrogen volume required to unload the frac hits. In addition, the time to unload frac hits will be decreased as the nitrogen injection rate increases. These results indicate that the time required to unload frac hits will be minimized if higher flow rates of nitrogen were utilized. Nonetheless, the volume of nitrogen required to unload the frac hits will be maximized. An important observation to highlight is that the operators can save money by reducing the time for injecting nitrogen. This observation was verified when increasing the injection pressure in the frac hit well in the Eagle Ford Shale, the time of injection was reduced 20%. This study presents the effects of nitrogen injection flow rate and injection pressure for unloading frac hits in gas wells. Due to the lack of published studies about this topic, this work can serve as a practical guideline for unloading frac hits in gas wells.

Abstract This paper elucidates the importance of flow assurance transient multiphase modelling to ensure uninterrupted late life productions. This is discussed in details through the case study of shut-in and restart scenarios of a subsea gas well (namely Well A) located in South China Sea region. There were two wells (Well A and Well B) producing steadily prior to asset shut-in, as a requirement for subsea pipeline maintenance works. However, it was found that Well A failed to restart while Well B successfully resumed production after the pipeline maintenance works. Flow assurance team is called in order to understand the root cause of the failed re-start of Well A to avoid similar failure for Well B and other wells in this region. Through failure analysis of Well A, key root cause is identified and associated operating strategy is proposed for use for Well B, which is producing through the same subsea infrastructure. Transient multiphase flow assurance model including subsea Well A, subsea Well B, associated spools, subsea pipeline and subsea riser is developed and fully benchmarked against field data to ensure realistic thermohydraulics representations of the actual asset. Simulation result shows failed restart of Well A and successful restart of Well B, which fully matched with field observations. Further analysis reveals that liquid column accumulated within the wellbore of Well A associates with extra hydrostatic head which caused failed well restart. Through a series of sensitivity analysis, the possibility of successful Well A restart is investigated by manipulating topsides back pressure settings and production flowrates prior to shut-in. These serve as a methodology to systematically analyze such transient scenario and to provide basis for field operating strategy. The analysis and strategy proposed through detailed modelling and simulation serves as valuable guidance for Well B, should shut-in and restart operation is required. This study shows the importance of modelling prior to late life field operations, in order to avoid similar failed well restart, which causes significant production and financial impacts.
