Physical constants (density, refractive index, viscosity, dielectric constant, dipole moment, solubility parameter) and some basicity parameters (donor number, proton chemical shift variation for CHCl3, gas phase basicity) have been determined for 3,3′-oxydipropionitrile (ODPN) at 25 °C. These results are compared with those for other usual solvents; they permit an explanation of its properties as a solvent for acid–base titrations, and the appearance of homohydrogen bonding in this medium.

Vinyl ketene (1,3-butadiene-1-one) has been synthesized by vacuum pyrolysis of 3-butenoic 2-butenoic anhydride. The microwave and infrared spectra of vinyl ketene in the gas phase at room temperature have been studied. The trans-rotamer has been identified, and the spectroscopic constants were found to be Ã= 39571(48) MHz, B̃ = 2392.9252(28) MHz, C̃ = 2256.0089(28) MHz, ⊿j = 0.414(31) kHz, and ⊿JK = - 34.694(92) kHz. The electrical dipole moment was found to be 0.987(23) D with μa = 0.865(14) D and μb = 0.475(41) D. A tentative assignment has been made for 17 of the 21 normal modes of vibration

A variation of the temperature changes the static dielectric constant (ε) and the refractive index (n) of solvents and, in conjunction with the measurement of solvent shifts of absorption and fluorescence maxima, allows the investigation of dipole moment changes of solutes in the excited state. For this purpose, investigations of the temperature dependences of ε and n of some pure and mixed solvents of different polarities have been made. It is found that the excited dipole moments of indole, 1,2-dimethylindole, 2,3-dimethylindole and tryptophan obtained from the shifts of the fluorescence maxima in mixed solvents at high temperatures are in good agreement with those obtained in other ways.

Cecil Bawn was a physical chemist with particular expertise in chemical kinetics. Early in his career he made pioneering studies of free radical reactions in the gas phase and, during the war years, on the chemistry of high explosives. From mid career, he was one of the pioneers of polymer chemistry and established and led a strong and diverse group of polymer scientists at the University of Liverpool. He was a private and enigmatic person, with a strong sense of duty. His caring and helpful attitude was greatly appreciated locally by his students and younger faculty members. Nationally, he made outstanding service contributions to physical chemistry and polymer chemistry.

The gas-phase paramagnetic resonance spectrum of NF in the J = 2 rotational level of the 1 ∆ state has been studied, and the dipole moment in this state is found to be 0.37 ± 0.60D. The rotational constant previously determined from the electronic spectrum is shown to be consistent with the electron resonance results, and the 14 N quadrupole coupling constant e 2 qQ is 4.1 ± 0.2 MHz. The hyperfine coupling constants of the 14 N and 19 F nuclei are + 109.92 ± 0.14 and +758.06 ± 0.23 MHz respectively.

A computational study of medium effect on solvation free energy, dipole moment, polarizability, hyperpolarizability and different molecular properties like chemical hardness & softness, chemical potential, electronegativity and electrophilicity index of metronidazole have been reported in this paper. Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) level of theory with 6-31G (d,p) basis set was applied for gas phase and solution. The effect of solvent polarity on solvation free energy, dipole moment, polarizability, hyperpolarizability and molecular properties were calculated by employing Solvation Model on Density (SMD). The solvation free energies and dipole moment of metronidazole were found to be increased in nonpolar to polar solvents. The dipole moment of metronidazole was higher in different solvent than that of the gas phase. Moreover, from non-polar to polar solvents the chemical potential, electronegativity and electrophilicity index were increased. On the other hand, opposite relation was found in the case of chemical hardness and softness. The results obtained in this study may lead to understand the stability and reactivity of metronidazole and the results will be of assistance to use the title molecule as reaction intermediates and pharmaceuticals.Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal 19(1): 9-14, 2016
