<p><b>The discovery of conductive and magnetic two-dimensional (2D) materials is critical for the development of next generation spintronics devices. Coordination chemistry in particular represents a highly versatile, though underutilized, route toward the synthesis of such materials with designer lattices. Here, we report the synthesis of a conductive, layered 2D metal–organic kagome lattice, Mn<sub>3</sub>(C<sub>6</sub>S<sub>6</sub>), using mild solution-phase chemistry. Strong geometric<i> </i>spin frustration in this system mediates spin freezing at low temperatures, which results in glassy magnetic behavior consistent with a geometrically frustrated (topological) spin glass. Notably, the material exhibits a large exchange bias of 1625 Oe, providing the first example of exchange bias in a coordination solid or a topological spin glass. More generally, these results demonstrate the potential utility of geometrically frustrated lattices in the design of new nanoscale spintronic materials.</b></p>

A new ternary material Co3(SbTe3)2 was prepared by using a rapid precipitation metathesis reaction between the Zintl material K3SbTe3 and CoCl2 in aqueous solution. The dc specific resistivity of this material is in the region for metallic conductors (p = 2.75 × 10-3 Ω-cm). The dc magnetic susceptibility of Co3(SbTe3)2 is reported over a 2.2 K-300 K temperature region, and the material is characterized as a spin glass with a freezing temperature of about 5 K. Magnetization data are also reported as both thermal remanent magnetization and isothermal remanent magnetization as a function of magnetizing field and temperature. When cooled well below the glass freezing temperature, the frozen spin glass has been observed to exhibit photomagnetic effects consistent with a disruption of the spin-glass state caused by uv-radiation.

Six novel cobalt–carboxylate–phosphinate coordination polymers exhibit 1D chain, 2D networks and 3D frameworks. With difference on their structures, the compounds show remarkable magnetic behavior diversity containing spin canting, spin glass, and antiferromagnetic interaction.

ABSTRACTMössbauer effect and neutron diffraction measurements have been made as a function of composition for YBa2(Cu1−xFex)3O7+δ. A chemically driven disordering of the sublattices is observed with increasing Fe concentration which results in a transition from the orthorhombic to a tetragonal phase. However, as the occupancy of the oxygen site 0(1) in the chain is depleted and the site of the ordered vacancy 0(5) between the chains becomes occupied, the total oxygen content is not reduced but remains near seven in contrast to behavior observed in the quenched tetragonal phases. Mössbauer spectra for x =0.05 at temperatures below 15K show magnetic hyperfine splitting which is characteristic of a spin glass; i.e., a distribution of magnetic fields. It is inferred from Mössbauer results that Fe preferentially occupies the Cu(1) site.

AbstractCuAl2O4 is a ternary oxide spinel with Cu2+ ions ($$s=1/2$$ s = 1 / 2 ) primarily populating the A-site diamond sublattice. The compound is reported to display evidence of spin glass behavior but possess a non-frozen magnetic ground state below the transition temperature. On the other hand, the spinel CuGa2O4 displays spin glass behavior at ~ 2.5 K with Cu2+ ions more readily tending to the B-site pyrochlore sublattice. Therefore, we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl2(1-x)Ga2xO4 examining the evolution of the magnetic behavior as Al3+ is replaced with a much larger Ga3+ ion. Our results show that the Cu2+ ions tend to migrate from tetrahedral to octahedral sites as the Ga3+ ion concentration increases, resulting in a concomitant change in the glassy magnetic properties of the solution. Results indicate glassy behavior for much of the solution with a general trend towards decreasing magnetic frustration as the Cu2+ ion shifts to the B-site. However, the $$x=0.1$$ x = 0.1 and 0.2 members of the system do not show glassy behavior down to our measurement limit (1.9 K) suggesting a delayed spin glass transition. We suggest that these two members are additional candidates for investigation to access highly frustrated exotic quantum states.
