REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations demand for an expedient discovery of a Cr(VI)-free alternative corrosion protection for light alloys even though the green alternatives might never be as cheap as current harmful technologies. In the present work, flash- plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings (FPEO) with the process duration < 90 s are developed on AZ31B alloy in varied mixtures of silicate-, phosphate-, aluminate-, and fluoride-based alkaline electrolytes implementing current density and voltage limits. The overall evaluation of the coatings’ anticorrosion performance (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test (NSST), paintability) shows that from nine optimized FPEO recipes, two (based on phosphate, fluoride, and aluminate or silicate mixtures) are found to be an adequate substitute for commercially used Cr(VI)-based conversion coating (CCC). The FPEO coatings with the best corrosion resistance consume a very low amount of energy (~1 kW h m−2 µm−1). It is also found that the lower the energy consumption of the FPEO process, the better the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating. The superb corrosion protection and a solid environmentally friendly outlook of PEO-based corrosion protection technology may facilitate the economic justification for industrial end-users of the current-consuming process as a replacement of the electroless CCC process.

Shantou atmospheric salt-fog environment is simulated with the comprehensive salt spray test chamber. By using reinforced concrete short beams under different water-cement radio, different corrosion time, the inclined section degradation rules of the corrosive reinforced concrete members are researched for establishing shear capacity of short beam formulas in salt-fog environment.

The study is examines the assessment of the corrosion-protective properties of zinc-rich coating based on water sodium silicate (ZRC) using the Electrochemical Impedance Spectra (EIS) with AutoLAB PGSTAT204N. The system consists of three electrodes: Ag/AgCl reference electrode in 3 M solution of KCl, auxiliary electrode – Pt (8x8 mm) and working electrodes for determination potential (Ecorr) and impedance measurement, salt spray test method and natural teszzt method at Dam Bay Marine Research Station, Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa, Viet Nam. ZSC can provide good cathodic protection when zinc content is 70% by weight or more. ZSC with a mixing ratio of High Modulus Liquid Sodium Glass / Zinc Powde : 25/75 by weight (working title – TTL-VN) has good corrosion protection after 16 cycles salt spray test and after 18 months natural test in seawater. The paint film has basic parameters as adhesion – 4,41 MPa, flexural strength – 2 mm, pendulum hardness – 0,62 conventional units and initial coating potentia l – 0,96 V Ag/AgCl.

This study aims to demonstrate the remarkable features of graphene-based fillers, which are able to improve the protective performance of acrylic coatings. Furthermore, the joint application of a cataphoretic primer and a spray top coat, containing graphene and functionalized graphene oxide flakes, respectively, enables the deposition of a double-layer coating with high conductivity and abrasion resistance properties, capable of offering excellent corrosion resistance to the metal substrate. The surface morphology of the single- and double-layer coatings was investigated by optical and electron microscopies, analysing the defectiveness introduced in the polymer matrix due to the filler agglomeration. The behavior in aggressive environments was assessed by exposure of the samples in the salt spray chamber, evaluating the blister formation and the adhesion level of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were employed to study the corrosion protection properties of the coatings, whose conductivity and abrasion resistance features were analysed by conductivity assessment and scrub tests, respectively. The incorporation of graphene-based fillers in the cataphoretic primer improves the corrosion protection properties of the system, while the graphene flakes provide the top coat spray layer with high conductivity and excellent abrasion resistance features. Thus, this work demonstrates the possibility of employing different types of graphene-based fillers and deposition methods for the creation of multifunctional coatings.

Composite films with polyurethane (PU), phenol formaldehyde resin (PFR) and boron, phosphorus-containing phenol formaldehyde resins (P-PFR and B, P-PFR), were synthesized using sol–gel and copolymerization techniques. These composite films were deposited via spin-coating onto an aluminum alloy (AA) for improve the corrosion protection. The effects of different types of PFR on the structural, thermal and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the composites were investigated. The structures and morphologies of the composites were investigated by the gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was shown from the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) that the mechanical and thermal properties of PU were improved by incorporation of PFR, P-PFR and B, P-PFR. In addition, the PU/PFR composites provided an excellent corrosion protection in comparison with PU according to potentio-dynamic and salt-spray analyses.

Magnesium alloys are widely used in applications where weight reduction is of primary importance. MgAZ91D is an Mg-Al-Zn alloy and its application in the automotive sector is limited by its poor corrosion resistance. Recent advances in solid state processing techniques have made it easier to modify the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of various alloys. Friction stir processing (FSP) is such a solid-state process for surface and sub-surface modification, which increases the microstructural densification, thereby producing fine and equiaxed grains. Through this work, an attempt was made to analyse the effect of friction stir processing on the corrosion resistance of the alloy in an enclosed salt spray chamber. Micro-analysis tools like FESEM and EDS are used to supplement our results. It is seen that, FSP significantly contributes to the increase in the corrosion resistance by homogenising the distribution of α and β phases and hence making the use of the alloy more practical in moisture rich environments.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to study the corrosion resistance of water-based sol-gel coatings containing titania nanoparticles doped with organic inhibitors for corrosion protection of AA2024 alloy. Design/methodology/approach – The coatings were obtained using tetraethylorthosilicate, 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, titanium (IV) tetrapropoxide and poly(ethylene imine) polymer as cross-linking agents. As corrosions inhibitors, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and salicylaldoxime were incorporated into the sol-gel for the improvement of the corrosion resistance. The corrosion protection performance of coatings was studied using the potentiodynamic scan and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate surface morphology of the coatings. Findings – The results indicated that doping the sol-gel coatings with inhibitors leads to improvement of the corrosion protection. The comparison of doped coatings confirmed that corrosion protection performance of the sol-gel coatings doped with 2-mercaptobenzoxazole was better than for the sol-gel coatings doped with salicylaldoxime. Also the EIS results verified self-healing effects for the sol-gel coatings doped with 2-mercaptobenzoxazole. Originality/value – This paper indicates 2-mercaptobenzoxazole and salicylaldoxime can be added as corrosion inhibitors to sol-gel coatings to improve their corrosion protective properties for AA2024 alloy.

In the paper mutual comparison of zinc coatings enriched with small additions of Mg and Al (up to 1 wt.% Mg and 1 wt.% Al) and traditional zinc coatings produced by hot dip galvanizing, concerning some important properties of coatings like coating structure, cracks formation after deformation and corrosion resistance of deformed samples was studied. It was shown, that while traditional hot-dip zinc coatings are formed by homogenous zinc layer, exhibiting only low amount of soluble aluminium, coatings enriched by small amounts of Mg and Al, namely 0.6% Mg and 0.8% Al are formed by dendritic zinc matrix and interdendritic phase containing Zn-Mg-Al eutectics. Development of cracks was investigated in the area of maximal deformation of the samples subjected to stretching. It was found, that while traditional zinc coatings showed sporadic long fine cracks, zinc coatings enriched with Mg and Al exhibited aggregation of short thick cracks in the deformed area. Samples of both materials after stretching were also exposed in neutral salt spray atmosphere in corrosion chamber. It can be concluded, that material with coatings enriched with Mg and Al showed better results in corrosion tests contrary to the presence of massive cracks in the coating. This significantly increased corrosion resistance is possible due to excellent adhesion of zinc coatings, containing Mg and Al on drawing steels.
