AbstractWe present a study of the ground state and stability of the fractional plateau phase (FPP) with M/Msat = 1/8 in the metallic Shastry–Sutherland system TmB4. Magnetization (M) measurements show that the FPP states are thermodynamically stable when the sample is cooled in constant magnetic field from the paramagnetic phase to the ordered one at 2 K. On the other hand, after zero-field cooling and subsequent magnetization these states appear to be of dynamic origin. In this case the FPP states are closely associated with the half plateau phase (HPP, M/Msat = ½), mediate the HPP to the low-field antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and depend on the thermodynamic history. Thus, in the same place of the phase diagram both, the stable and the metastable (dynamic) fractional plateau (FP) states, can be observed, depending on the way they are reached. In case of metastable FP states thermodynamic paths are identified that lead to very flat fractional plateaus in the FPP. Moreover, with a further decrease of magnetic field also the low-field AF phase becomes influenced and exhibits a plateau of the order of 1/1000 Msat.

AbstractWe have shown that the Fano interference in the decay channels of a three-level system can lead to considerably different absorption and emission profiles. We found that a coherence can be built up in the ground state doublet, with strength depending on a coupling parameter that arises from the Fano interference. The coherence can in principle lead to breaking of the detail balance between the absorption and emission processes in atomic systems.

Abstract An external resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field, an effective method to mitigate or suppress the edge localized mode (ELM), has been planned to be applied on the ELM control issue in ITER. A new set of magnetic perturbation coils, named as high m coils, has been developed for the EAST tokamak. The magnetic perturbation field of the high m coils is localized in the midplane of the low field side (LFS), with a spectrum characteristic of high m and wide n, where m and n are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers, respectively. The high m coils generates a strong localized perturbation field. Edge magnetic topology under the application of high m coils should have either a small or no stochastic region. With the combination of the high m coils and the current RMP coils, flexible working scenarios of the magnetic perturbation field are available, which is beneficial for ELM control exploration on EAST. Numerical simulations have been carried out to characterize the high m coil system, including the magnetic spectrum and magnetic topology, which shows a great flexibility of magnetic perturbation variation as a tool to investigate the interaction between ELM and external magnetic perturbation.

Biological systems activate ground-state dioxygen (3O2) for controlled energy transduction and chemical syntheses via electron-transfer and hydrogen-atomtransfer reduction to O2-, HOO·, and HOOH. These reduction products are further activated with metalloproteins to accomplish oxygen atom-transfer chemistry. Conversely, green plants via photosystem II facilitate the oxidation of chemistry.

In this paper we will present a study of several Tm and Pr compounds, where the rare earth atoms have as their two lowest energy levels a quasi-doublet ground state. These compounds are also compared with Er and/or Dy compounds, which have a Kramers doublet as ground state. Four compounds (TmNi5, TmCu2, TmCuAl and PrRu2Si2) are discussed in sequence, where the energy separation of the two levels of the quasi-doublet ground state doublet is increasing. These compounds were studied with rare earth Mössbauer spectroscopy and µSR as the main measuring techniques.
