Liquid marbles are non-wetting droplets coated with microscopic powder. We measure the effective surface tension of a liquid marble using X-ray which reveals the hidden liquid–solid interface. A systematic curve fitting procedure is also provided.

X-ray reflectivity (XR) measurements with a synchrotron radiation source were carried out for thin polymer films on a glass plate. From the XR data, the film thickness and surface and interface roughnesses could be determined. In addition, the appropriate conditions and precision for measurements were also discussed. Kiessig fringes were observed clearly for specular XR measurements of poly(methylmethacrylate) thin film. Analysis of the XR data allowed the determination of the film thickness very precisely. By a curve-fitting procedure of the XR profile, the film-surface roughness and film–substrate interface roughnesses were determined. A Fourier transform of the XR data was performed as an alternative method of evaluating the film thickness. The values for the film thickness obtained by the curve-fitting procedure and Fourier-transform procedure were slightly different from each other. One possibility for the cause of this difference may be an integral error and/or cut-off effect in the Fourier-transform procedure. The XR technique with synchrotron radiation is a very powerful tool for structural characterization of thin polymer films.

ABSTRACTA PbTiO3(001) film grown on MgO(001) by pulsed laser deposition is examined as an example to demonstrate the applications of the domain stability map for epitaxial perovskite films which shows regions of stable domains and fractions of domains in a polydomain structure. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that the film has a …c/a/c/a… domain structure in a temperature range of °C to 400°C with the fraction of c-domains decreasing with increasing temperature. These experimental results are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions based on the stability map.

Mesoscopic structures of SiC fibers produced from polycarbosilane by different methods were studied by diffraction and small-angle scattering of neutrons and x-rays. Microvoids of a size of 4–10 Å in diameter have been observed for the first time by neutron scattering in a medium momentum transfer range (Q = 0.1–1.0 Å−1). The size and the volume fraction of β–SiC particles were determined for fibers prepared at different heat-treatment temperatures. The results show that wide-angle neutron scattering measurements are especially useful for the study of the mesoscopic structure of multicomponent materials.
