The effects of ambient helium gas pressure on the optical, structural and electrical properties of the diamond-like carbon thin films from camphoric carbon soot target, deposited by pulsed laser deposition have been studied. Optical gap and electrical resistivity are found to increase initially at low ambient pressure of 0.008 Torr. With further increase in ambient pressure up to 2.6 Torr, optical gap and electrical resistivity are found to decrease. The films are characterized for their structural properties using different spectroscopic techniques such as, XPS, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy, and surface morphological techniques like SEM and AFM, and their electrical properties using four-probe resistance measurement.

Undoped diamond like carbon thin films have been grown by DC - PECVD system. The synthesis of the DLC films was carried out in the presence of gas of (CH4 + H2 + Ar) in a custom made reactor. The substrate temperature was initiated from the range of 300 °C to 600 °C under an optimum pressurized medium. The AFM image reveals that the optimization of DLC films growth at the substrate temperature 400 °C has a significant surface roughness and average grain size which is compatible to the result of film thickness measurement. The sample J400 shows an excellent nonlinear rectifying diode-like characteristic across the small potential difference.

Carbon thin films with diamond-like properties have generated significant interest in condensed matter science in recent years. Their extreme hardness combined with insulating electronic characteristics and high thermal conductivity make them attractive for a variety of uses including abrasion resistant coatings and applications in electronic devices. Understanding the growth and structure of such films is therefore of technological interest as well as a goal of basic physics and chemistry research. Recent investigations have demonstrated the usefulness of energetic ion beam deposition in the preparation of such films. We have begun an electron microscopy investigation into the microstructure and electron energy loss spectra of diamond like carbon thin films prepared by energetic ion beam deposition.The carbon films were deposited using the MEIRA ion beam facility at the Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Yavne, Israel. Mass selected C+ beams in the range 50 to 300 eV were directed onto Si {100} which had been etched with HF prior to deposition.
