Background: Modular steel buildings (MSB) are extensively used in petrochemical plants and refineries. Limited guidelines are available in the industry for analysis and design of (MSB) subject to accidental vapor cloud explosions (VCEs). Objectives: The paper presents simplified engineering model for modular steel buildings (MSB) subject to accidental vapor cloud explosions (VCEs) that are extensively used in petrochemical plants and refineries. Method: A Single degree of freedom (SDOF) dynamic model is utilized to simulate the dynamic response of primary building components. Analytical expressions are then provided to compute the dynamic load factors (DLF) for critical building elements. Recommended foundation systems are also proposed to install the modular building with minimum cost. Results: Numerical results are presented to illustrate the dynamic response of (MSB) subject to blast loading. It is shown that (DLF)=1.6 is attained at (td/t)=0.4 for front wall (W1) with (td/T)=1.25. For side walls (DLF)=1.41 and is attained at (td/t)=0.6. Conclusions: The paper presented simplified tools for analysis and design of (MSB) subject accidental vapor cloud blast explosions (VCEs). The analytical expressions can be utilized by practitioners to compute the (MSB) response and identify the design parameters. They are simple to use compared to Finite Element Analysis.

Isobaric equilibrium data (P = 101.3 kPa) for the system cyclohexane-acetic acid-propionic acid have been measured by two different analytical techniques. Activity coefficients calculated by simultaneous solving of equations for the chemical and phase equilibria were subjected to a consistency test based on inaccuracies determined from the error propagation law, and were correlated by Wilson’s equation. The activity coefficients measured were compared with those calculated from binary vapour-liquid equilibrium data and with values predicted by the UNIFAC method.

Due to the upgrade and reconstruct of a high-piled wharf, the piling construction may cause the damage of the large diameter underground pipe of a power plant nearby. For this problem, a dynamic time-history analysis model was established using MIDAS/GTS program. Based on the analysis of the pile driving vibration and its propagation law, some parameters, such as the modulus of the soil, the Poissons ratio of soil, the action time of vibration load and the damping ratio of the soil that may have an effect on the response law of the soil, were studied. The study results not only serve as an important inference to the construction of this case, but also accumulate experience and data for other similar engineering practices.

The research of stress wave propagation law under cracked rock has important theoretical value and practical significance. Because of the discontinuity, nonelasticity and nonlinearity of the cracks, the theoretical interpretation and mechanism research about tress wave propagation law are a great challenge to researchers for a long time. From the establishment of the research method, the determination of mathematic model of micro-cracks and the main solutions, this paper brief reviews the current development of the influence of the complicated micro-cracks on stress wave propagation law.

Fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) test of B grade steel was performed to clarify the probabilistic behavior of crack propagation in near-threshold region and steady-state region. As a result, a crack propagation law considering influence of threshold value and average stress can be well proposed to estimate crack propagation behavior of B grade steel. The estimated value of threshold value ΔKth is 293.65MPamm1/2, approaching the experimental value of ΔKth, about 280.39MPamm1/2. Furthermore, the probabilistic FCGR curves of B grade steel are established from the viewpoint of survival probability and confidence degree, which reflects the influence of scatter regularity of data and sample size on reliability assessment.

In recent decades, natural gas has been gaining importance in world energy scene and established itself as an important source of energy. One of the biggest obstacles to increase the usage of natural gas is its transportation, mostly done in its liquid form, LNG – Liquefied Natural Gas, and storage. It involves the liquefaction of natural gas, transport by ship, its storage and subsequent regasification, in order to get natural gas in its original form and send it to the final destination through natural gas pipeline system. Nowadays, most terminals for receiving, storing and regasificating LNG, as well as sending-out natural gas are built onshore. These terminals, however, are normally built close to populated areas, where consuming centers can be found, creating safety risks to the population nearby. Apart from possible damages caused by its cryogenic temperatures, LNG spills are associated with hazards such as pool fires and ignition of drifting vapor clouds. Alternatively to onshore terminals, there are currently several offshore terminals projects in the world and some are already running. Today, Brazil owns two FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) type offshore terminals, one in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro and the other in Pece´m, Ceara´, both contracted to PETROBRAS. The identification of the operation risks sources of LNG terminals onshore and offshore and its quantification through mathematical models can identify the most suitable terminal type for a particular location. In order to identify and compare the risks suggested by onshore and offshore LNG terminals, we have taken the example of the Suape Port and its Industrial Complex, located in Pernambuco, Brazil, which is a promising location for the installation of a LNG terminal. The present work has focused on calculating the distance to the LNG vapor cloud with the lower flammability limits (LFL), as well as thermal radiation emitted by pool fire, in case of a LNG spill from an onshore and from an offshore terminal. The calculation was made for both day and night periods, and for three types of events: operational accident, non-operational accident and worst case event, corresponding to a hole size of 0,75m, 1,5m e 5m, respectively. Even though the accidents that happen at an onshore terminal generate smaller vulnerability distances, according to the results it would not be desirable for the Suape Port, due to the location high density of industries and people working. Therefore, an offshore terminal would be more desirable, since it presents less risk to the surrounding populations, as well as for workers in this location.
