Combining three features—the high affinity of squaramides toward anions, cooperation in ion pair binding and preorganization of the binding domains in the tripodal platform—led to the effective receptor 2. The lack of at least one of these key elements in the structures of reference receptors 3 and 4 caused a lower affinity towards ion pairs. Receptor 2 was found to form an intramolecular network in wet chloroform, which changed into inorganic–organic associates after contact with ions and allowed salts to be extracted from an aqueous to an organic phase. The disparity in the binding mode of 2 with sulfates and with other monovalent anions led to the selective extraction of extremely hydrated sulfate anions in the presence of more lipophilic salts, thus overcoming the Hofmeister series.

A nitride layer was formed on a SiC surface by plasma nitridation using pure nitrogen as the reaction gas at the temperature from 800°C to 1400°C. The surface was characterized by XPS. The XPS measurement showed that an oxinitride layer was formed on the SiC surface by the plasma nitridation. The high process temperature seemed to be effective to activate the niridation reaction. A SiO2film was deposited on the nitridation layer to form SiO2/nitride/SiC structure. The interface state density of the SiO2/nitride/SiC structure was lower than that of the SiO2/SiC structure. This suggested that the nitridation was effective to improve the interface property.

ABSTRACTPolyethylene thin films were deposited by the ionized cluster beam (ICB) method. The dielectric, resistivity, and breakdown field measurements showed that the ICB polyethylene films have excellent properties as an electrical insulator. The characteristics of Au/polyethylene/Si MIS diodes and MISFErs indicated that the ICB method can control the film-substrate interface property. The SIMS and ESCAan alyses showed that the ICB films have pure and stable chemical structure.

Abstract The salting-out of lignosulfonates (LSs) follows the Hofmeister series, but different LSs show different susceptibility to salting-out. By comparing results for a large number of LSs from different plant species, pulping conditions, and post-treatment of the LS, it was found that the salting-out concentration for different LSs is mainly due to differences in the plant species with guaiacyl LS being much more salt-tolerant than guaiacyl-syringyl LS. The pulping conditions have only a minor effect on the salt tolerance of the different LSs. Post-treatment that increases the molecular weight or reduces the sulfonation also reduces the salt tolerance.

We report a Many Body Energy (MBE) analysis of aqueous ionic clusters containing kosmotropic and chaotropic anions and cations at the two opposite ends of the Hofmeister series to quantify how these ions alter the interaction between the water molecules in their immediate surroundings.
