AbstractStructural coloration using metasurfaces has been steadily researched to overcome the limitations of conventional color printing using pigments by improving the resolution, lowering the toxicity, and increasing the durability. Many metasurfaces have been demonstrated for dynamic structural coloration to convert images at the visible spectrum. However, the previous works cannot reach near-zero scattering when colors are turned-off, preventing it from being cryptographic applications. Herein, we propose a completely on/off switchable structural coloration with polarization-sensitive metasurfaces, enabling full-colored images to be displayed and hidden through the control of the polarization of incident light. It is confirmed that the nanostructure exhibits the polarization-dependent magnetic field distributions, and near-zero scattering is realized when the polarization of incident light is perpendicular to the long axis of the nanofins. Also, the metasurfaces are made up of triple-nanofin structures whose lengths affect locations of resonance peaks, resulting in full-color spectrum coverages. With such advantages, a QR code image, a two-color object image, and an overlapped dual-portrait image are obtained with the metasurfaces. Such demonstrations will provide potential applications in the fields of high-security information encryption, security tag, multichannel imaging, and dynamic displays.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to prepare water-based binders, which aimed to avoid printhead blockage and to improve dimensional accuracy of inkjet 3D printing (3DP) technology, and a feasible algorithm of full-color printing was realized. Design/methodology/approach A self-developed color 3D printer was made by using a piezoelectric printhead of Epson Dx-5. Several water-based binders and corresponding gypsum composite powders were prepared, and the optimum binder-powder assembly was then determined through elementary adhesive testing and roller paving testing. Full-color printing was implemented based on halftoning algorithms that used different threshold matrices for different ink channels, and the performances of various algorithms were evaluated in terms of both subjective and objective indices. Findings The optimum binder-powder assembly can solve the jamming problem of printhead and realize agreeable dimensional accuracy with the relative error less than 2.5% owing to the satisfying boundary diffusion control ability. And the determined halftone algorithm was verified to be agreeable for 3D color printing. Originality/value The prepared approach of water-based binders and gypsum composite powders can be applied to similar 3DP systems even if different materials are introduced. And the used halftone algorithms provide feasible guidelines to the implementation of 3D full-color printing.

The article is devoted to the study of the fluctuation properties of the interaction of halftone screens with different lineatures in the process of full-color printing and the development of a method for assessing the visual perception of these interactions. One of the main tasks solved in the process of printing reproduction of graphic information is to maintain uniformity of tone of large background areas in a print. Violation of the uniformity of the tone of these areas leads to fl - disturbances in the reproduction stability of halft screen structures used in the reproduction process, which become noticeable during the visual perception of the finished images. This issue is especially relevant in the manufacture of full-color images, where there is an interaction of several halftone screens produced for four copies of the image, corresponding to the colors of printing synthesis in the process of color separation. A significant influence on the level of fluctuations is exerted not only by the choice of angles of mutual arrangement of these halftone screens, which is regulated by technological standards, but also by the choice of halftone screening lineature. At the same time, compliance with technological standards does not always guarantee a high-quality result. The purpose of the study is to provide the opportuni-ty to choose the optimal lineature of regular halft screening, which, with a combination of these screens, will minimize the level of noticeability of fluctuations (noise) and, as a result, improve the quality of full-color printed materials. To achieve this goal, in the framework of this work, a method for evaluation of the fl properties of the interaction of raster structures based on the calculation of the standard deviation characterizing the histogram of a particular halftone field and, as a result, the level of fluctuations is developed. The developed method allows choosing the optimal halftone screening lineature, which can be used with a double or triple combination of halftone screens.
