This study aimed at optimizing the production of glycolic acid from glycerol catalytic oxidation over a silver catalyst supported on a mixed cerium-zirconium oxide, to progress towards the industrialization of a derived process. Optimization of the operating conditions was performed using the response surface methodology. We concluded that the production of glycolic acid depends mainly of glycerol concentration, NaOH/glycerol ratio, catalyst/glycerol ratio, and O2/glycerol ratio. The optimal conditions we found were a temperature of 60 °C, a NaOH/glycerol molar ratio of 2, an O2/glycerol molar ratio of 0.23, and a catalyst/glycerol mass ratio of 0.07. With these optimal conditions, it was possible to increase the glycerol concentration from 0.3 M to 2 M, obtaining an increase in the concentration of glycolic acid in the liquid fraction, from 0.27 mol/L of glycolic acid (with initial glycerol solution 0.3 M) to 0.88 mol/L (with initial solution 2 M), while keeping a 100% glycerol conversion.

Background:: Several studies have suggested potential aptitude of polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)-derived nanoparticles (NPs) to improve the antitumor efficacy of anticancer drugs against colon cancer. Further, conjugation of lectins over the surface of the NPs may ameliorate interaction and thus enhance attachment of NPs with receptors. Objective:: The main goal of the study was to prepare and evaluate targeting potential (in vivo) of the optimized NPs against colorectal cancer. Methods:: The 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) loaded and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)-conjugated PLGA-NPs (WFUNPs) were prepared and then they were evaluated in vivo for targeting aptitude of formulation using gamma scintigraphy after oral delivery. The WGA-conjugated and non-conjugated optimized NPs were compared for any significant results. Further, optimized formulations were also assessed for different parameters such as radiolabeling efficiency, sodium pertechnetate uptake, stability of NPs, and organ distribution study. Results:: Findings suggested prolonged retention of 99mTc-tagged WFUNPs in the colonic region after 24 h study. Eventually, the outcome from conjugated formulation revealed enhanced bioavailability of the drug in blood plasma for up to 24 h. Conclusion:: In conclusion, WGA-conjugation to NPs could improve the performance of the PLGA-NPs in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Microparticles are ubiquitous in applications ranging from electronics and drug delivery to cosmetics and food. Conventionally, non-spherical microparticles in various materials with specific shapes, sizes, and physicochemical properties have been fabricated using cleanroom-free lithography techniques such as soft lithography and its high-resolution version particle replication in non-wetting template (PRINT). These methods process the particle material in its liquid/semi-liquid state by deformable molds, limiting the materials from which the particles and the molds can be fabricated. In this study, the microparticle material is exploited as a sheet placed on a deformable substrate, punched by a robust mold. Drawing inspiration from the macro-manufacturing technique of punching metallic sheets, Micromechanical Punching (MMP) is a high-throughput technique for fabrication of non-spherical microparticles. MMP allows production of microparticles from prepatterned, porous, and fibrous films, constituting thermoplastics and thermosetting polymers. As an illustration of application of MMP in drug delivery, flat, microdisk-shaped Furosemide embedded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microparticles are fabricated and Furosemide release is observed. Thus, it is shown in the paper that Micromechanical punching has potential to make micro/nanofabrication more accessible to the research and industrial communities active in applications that require engineered particles.

Porous adsorber membranes are promising materials for the removal of charged pollutants, such as heavy metal ions or organic dyes as model substances for pharmaceuticals from water. Here, we present the surface grafting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) track-etched membranes having well defined cylindrical pores of 0.2 or 1 µm diameter with two polyelectrolytes, poly(2-acrylamido glycolic acid) (PAGA) and poly(N-acetyl dehydroalanine) (PNADha). The polyelectrolyte functionalised membranes were characterised by changes in wettability and hydraulic permeability in response to the external stimuli pH and the presence of Cu2+ ions. The response of the membranes proved to be consistent with functionalisation inside the pores, and the change of grafted polyelectrolyte macro-conformation was due to the reversible protonation or binding of Cu2+ ions. Moreover, the adsorption of the model dye methylene blue was studied and quantified. PAGA-grafted membranes showed an adsorption behavior following the Langmuir model for methylene blue.
