<p>Design of materials with novel sensitivities and smart behaviour is important for the development of smart systems with automated responsiveness. We have recently reported the synthesis of hydrogels, cross-linked by <i>N,N'</i>-diallyltartardiamide (DAT). The covalent DAT-crosslinking points have vicinal diols which can be easily cleaved with periodate, generating valuable a-oxo-aldehyde functional groups, useful for further chemical modification. Based on those findings, we envisioned that a self-healable hydrogel could be obtained by incorporation of primary amino functional groups, from <a>2-aminoethyl methacrylate </a>hydrochloride (AEMA), coexisting with DAT into the same network. The a-oxo-aldehyde groups generated after the reaction with periodate would arise in the immediate environment of amine groups to form imine cross-links. For this purpose, DAT-crosslinked hydrogels were synthesized and carefully characterized. The cleavage of DAT-crosslinks with periodate promoted changes in the mechanical and swelling properties of the materials. As expected, a self-healing behavior was observed, based on the spontaneous formation of imine covalent bonds. In addition, we surprisingly found a combination of fast vicinal diols cleavage and a low speed self-crosslinking reaction by imine formation. Consequently, it was found a time-window in which a periodate-treated polymer was obtained in a transient liquid state, which can be exploited to choose the final shape of the material, before automated gelling. The singular properties attained on these hydrogels could be useful for developing sensors, actuators, among other smart systems.</p>

Background and Objectives: Tea is considered one of the most consumed drinks around the world and the health benefits of it have recently attracted the attention of different researchers. It has also been proven beneficial in preventing the danger of some diseases like cancer and cardiovascular problems. Further, lipid oxidation is one of the major problems in food products. Considering the above-mentioned issues, the present review focused on various techniques used to extract polyphenols from different kinds of tea, as well as their use in the food industry. Results and Conclusion: Based on our findings in this review, the main components of tea are polyphenols that have health benefits and include catechins, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate, gallic acid, flavonoids, flavonols, and theophlavins. From these components, catechin is regarded as the most beneficial component. Many techniques have been discovered and reformed to extract tea compounds such as solvent-based extraction, microwave-assisted water extraction, and ultrasound-assisted extraction techniques. Overall, the microwave-assisted water extraction method is a useful method for extracting tea polyphenols, which may be used in the meat, oil, and dairy industries.

The effect of grinding on the pharmaceutical properties of matrix tablets consisting of ground glutinous rice starch (GRS) and theophylline (TH) was predicted by near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Ground GRS samples were prepared by grinding GRS in a planetary ball mill for 0-120 min, measured by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and NIR, and then evaluated for crystallinity (%XRD) based on XRD profiles. Tablets containing TH (5 w/w%), ground GRS (94 w/w%), and magnesium stearate (1 w/w%) were formed by compression. Gel-forming and drug-release processes of the tablets were measured using a dissolution instrument with X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Swelling ratio (SWE) and mean drug-release time (MDT) were evaluated based on XCT and drug-release profiles, respectively. Calibration models for predicting percent %XRD, MDT, and SWE were constructed based on the NIR of ground GRS using partial least-squares. The results indicated the possibility of controlling the pharmaceutical properties of matrix tablets by altering the pre-gelatinization of GRS based on changes in their NIR spectra during the milling process.
