AbstractNanocrystalline semiconductor particles exhibit a size dependent bandgap emission, due to size quantisation effects. These particles are derived from solution chemistry and can be made monodisperse under the right synthesis conditions. Compared to organic materials, the inorganic nanoparticles show much higher stability against oxidation and degradation, which makes them an interesting candidate for LEDs and displays. So far, LEDs based on semiconductor nanoparticles typically included low stability organic materials to provide charge injection. The talk will present a new class of nanoparticle LEDs, made without sensitive organic materials. These LEDs show high efficiencies, well defined color throughout the red to green part of the visible spectrum and improved stability under ambient conditions without excessive encapsulation. Using high quality monodisperse suspensions, high color purity is achieved for the emission which paves the road to cheap, high quality displays based on inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles.

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis, which is an alternative approach to the Haber–Bosch process, has attracted the attention of researchers because of its advantages including mild working conditions, environmental protection, and simple process. However, the biggest problem in this field is the lack of high-performance catalysts. Here, we report high-efficiency electroreduction of N2 to NH3 on γ-MnO2-supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd/γ-MnO2) under ambient conditions, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity with an NH3 yield rate of 19.72 μg·mg−1Pd h−1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 8.4% at −0.05 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization shows that Pd nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed on the γ-MnO2. Pd/γ-MnO2 outperforms other catalysts including Pd/C and γ-MnO2 because of its synergistic catalytic effect between Pd and Mn.

With gas becoming a fuel of choice for clean energy, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is being transported and re-gasification terminals are being set up at several locations. Re-gasification of LNG leads to availability of considerable cold-energy which can be utilized to gain power and efficiency in a Gas Turbine (GT) based Power Plant. With a number of LNG Re-gasification Terminals coming up in India & around the globe, setting up of a high efficiency CCPP adjacent to the terminal considering utilization of the cold energy to augment its performance, and also save energy towards re-gasification of LNG, provides a feasible business opportunity. Thermodynamic analysis and major applications of the LNG re-gasification cold energy in Gas Turbine based power generation cycle, are discussed in this paper. The feasibility of cooling GT inlet air by virtue of the cold energy of Liquefied LNG to increase power output of a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) for different ambient conditions is analyzed and also the effect on efficiency is discussed. The use of cold energy in condenser cooling water circulating system to improve efficiency of the CCPP is also analyzed. Air cooling capacity and power augmentation for a combined cycle power plant based on the advanced class industrial heavy duty gas turbine are demonstrated as a function of the ambient temperature and humidity. The economic feasibility of utilizing the cold energy is also deliberated.

A versatile synthetic protocol of aza-Friedel−Crafts alkylation has been developed for the synthesis of quaternary a-amino esters. This operationally simple alkylation proceeds under ambient conditions with high efficiency, regioselectivity, and an exceptionally broad scope of arene nucleophiles. A key feature of this alkylation is the role associated with the silver(I) salt counteranions liberated during the reaction. Taking advantage of a phase-transfer counteranion/BrØnsted acid pair mechanism, a catalytic enantioselective version of the reaction is also reported.

The combination of hybrid perovskite and Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) has the potential for realizing high-efficiency thin-film tandem solar cells because of the complementary tunable bandgaps and excellent photovoltaic properties of these materials. In tandem solar device architectures, the interconnecting layer plays a critical role in determining the overall cell performance, requiring both an effective electrical connection and high optical transparency. We used nanoscale interface engineering of the CIGS surface and a heavily doped poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA) hole transport layer between the subcells that preserves open-circuit voltage and enhances both the fill factor and short-circuit current. A monolithic perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cell achieved a 22.43% efficiency, and unencapsulated devices under ambient conditions maintained 88% of their initial efficiency after 500 hours of aging under continuous 1-sun illumination.

Technological and economic concerns correlated to fulfilling future emissions and CO2 standards require great research efforts to define an alternative solution for low emissions and highly efficient propulsion systems. Alternative fuel formulation could contribute to this aim. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with lower carbon content than other fossil fuels and which is easily vaporized at ambient conditions has the advantage of lowering CO2 emissions and optimizing the combustion process. Liquefied petroleum gas characteristics and availability makes the fuel a promising alternative for internal combustion engines. The possible combination of using it in high-efficiency compression ignition engines makes it worth analyzing the innovative method of using LPG as a blend component in diesel. Few relevant studies are detectable in literature in this regard. In this study, two blends containing diesel and LPG, in volume ratios 20/80 and 35/65, respectively, were formulated and utilized. Their effects on combustion and emissions performance were assessed by performing proper experimental tests on a modern light-duty single-cylinder engine test rig. Reference operating points at conventional engine calibration settings were examined. A specific exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) parametrization was performed evaluating the LPG blends’ potential in reducing the smoke emissions at standard engine-out NOx levels. The results confirm excellent NOx-smoke trade-off improvements with smoke reductions up to 95% at similar NOx and efficiency. Unburnt emissions slightly increase, and to acceptable levels. Improvements, in terms of indicated specific fuel consumption (ISFC), are detected in the range of 1–3%, as well as the CO2 decrease proportionally to the mixing ratio.
