Bioactive glasses are promising materials for various applications, such as bone grafts and implants. The development of sintering techniques for bioactive glasses is one of the most important ways to expand the application to biomaterials. In this paper, we demonstrate the low-temperature mineralization sintering process (LMSP) of glass nanoparticles and their crystallization behavior. LMSP is a novel process employed to densify glass nanoparticles at an extremely low temperature of 120 °C. For this new approach, the hydrothermal condition, mineralization, and the nanosize effect are integrated into LMSP. To induce mineralization in LMSP, bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGNPs, 55SiO2-40CaO-5P2O5, mol%), prepared by the sol-gel process, were mixed with a small amount of simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. As a result, 93% dense BGNPs were realized under a temperature of 120 °C and a uniaxial pressure of 300 MPa. Due to the effect of mineralization, crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) was clearly formed at the boundaries of BGNPs, filling particles and interstitials. As a result, the relative density was remarkably close to that of the BGNPs conventionally sintered at 1050 °C. Additionally, the Vickers hardness value of LMSP samples varied from 2.10 ± 0.12 GPa to 4.28 ± 0.11 GPa, and was higher than that of the BGNPs conventionally sintered at 850 °C (2.02 ± 0.11 GPa). These results suggest that, in addition to LMSP being an efficient densification method for obtaining bulk bioactive glasses at a significantly lower temperature level, this process has great potential for tissue engineering applications, such as scaffolds and implants.

Nanosized spherical LiFePO4/C composite was synthesized from nanosized spherical FePO4·2H2O, Li2C2O4, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, oxalic acid, and sucrose by binary sintering process. The phases and morphologies of LiFePO4/C were characterized using SEM, TEM, CV, EIS, EDS, and EDX as well as charging and discharging measurements. The results showed that the as-prepared LiFePO4/C composite with good conductive webs from nanosized spherical FePO4·2H2O exhibits excellent electrochemical performances, delivering an initial discharge capacity of 161.7 mAh·g−1at a 0.1 C rate, 152.4 mAh·g−1at a 1 C rate and 131.7 mAh·g−1at a 5 C rate, and the capacity retention of 99.1%, 98.7%, and 95.8%, respectively, after 50 cycles. Meanwhile, the high and low temperature performance is excellent for 18650 battery, maintaining capacity retention of 101.7%, 95.0%, 88.3%, and 79.3% at 55°C, 0°C, −10°C, and −20°C by comparison withthat of room temperature (25°C) at the 0.5 C rate over a voltage range of 2.2 V to 3.6 V, respectively.

Low temperature sintered MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass-ceramic with high mechanical and low thermal expansion was prepared for package. The remarkable influence of B2O3 addition on the electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties was fully investigated. A small amount of B2O3 promoted the sintering process and improved the densification of MAS. The kinetics via Kissinger method indicated that an appropriate B2O3 content decreased the activation energy and helped the occurrence of crystallization. Due to the increase of crystallinity and indialite phase, B2O3 addition significantly enhanced flexural strength and Young’s modulus. MAS doped with 3wt% B2O3 can be sintered at 900 °C and obtained good properties: σ = 229 MPa, φ = 86 GPa, α = 1.66×10-6 /°C, εr = 5.29, and tanδ = 5.9×10-4.

Multiferroic 0.6BaTiO3-0.4NiFe2O4dense nanoceramic composites were synthesized via a powder-in-sol precursor hybrid chemical synthesis route and a ceramic sintering process. At the measured frequency range (1 kHz~1 MHz), the relative dielectric constant is 150~1670 and the dielectric loss is 0.05~0.70. The composite ceramic showed obvious coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases. With the increase of temperature, the saturation ferromagnetic magnetization decreases, while the ferroelectric polarization increases.

Sintered ZTA(zirconia toughened alumina) which has good mechanical properties at a low temperature was produced by milling and mixing with Al2O3 and ZrO2(3Y-TZP). In order to examine the effect of sintering aids on the mechanical properties of ZTA, fracture toughness and hardness of the produced ZTA were observed in accordance with change of the added quantity of ZrO2 Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction technique were applied to observe microstructural change and phase transformation during the process. Experimental results showed that the addition of sintering aids in ZTA at a low temperature induced densification and adding SiO2 and talc lowered sintering temperature and promoted crystallization process of the compound. The mechanical strength of ZTA added ZrO2 showed higher mechanical strength and SEM analysis revealed that Al2O3 and ZrO2 during the sintering process restrained the grain growth each other. Especially, the 92% Al2O3 added sintering aids showed more than 98% of the theoretical density and more than 1500 Hv of hardness value at a low temperature of 1400. It was also showed that the fracture toughness is gradually increasing first and decreasing later in accordance with the quantity of ZrO2.
