We have developed a piezoelectric braided cord consisting of a conducting fiber yarn core, piezoelectric poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) fiber yarn and a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) middle sheath, and a conducting fiber outer shield (piezoelectric PLLA braided cord). Actually, we made various types of piezoelectric PLLA braided cords using Japanese traditional braiding method called as Kumihimo-gumi in Japanese. Furthermore, by optimization based on the calculation results for each type of piezoelectric PLLA Kumihimo-gumi obtained by the finite element method (FEM), we were able to develop a new type of piezoelectric PLLA braided cord with a sensing function for complex motion (piezoelectric PLLA Kumihimo-gumi). Finally, we developed a new wearable sensor for a selfie stick which is a popular smartphone accessory, fabricated from a piezoelectric PLLA Kumihimo-gumi.

Due to the poor healing ability of anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL), surgical interventions with graft materials are often needed to reconstruct the knee joint. Electrospinning is widely utilized to manufacture highly aligned fibrous materials. When cultured on such substrates, ligament fibroblasts are known to exhibit elongation and enhanced collagen production [1, 2]. Poly-L-lactic-acid (PLLA) is a popular biocompatible material with high mechanical strength, and is most often used in electrospinning with chloroform as solvent. Hexafluoropropanol (HFP), another solvent, generates more uniform and consistent electrospun PLLA fibers. In this study, we investigated the effects of electrospun PLLA fiber scaffolds using different solvent on ligament tissue engineering. PLLA fibers electrospun with chloroform or HFP were compared for their structure and mechanical characteristics. We also investigated their effects on ligament cell morphology and proliferation. Further analysis of composite fiber bilayers were also performed [3].

AbstractElectrospun poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) nonwoven represent potential options for biodegradable medical implants. They can be manufactured with high reproducibility and do offer the potential for chemical modification to alter matrix properties. In our study, we investigate the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of PLLA fiber matrices. Fibrous nonwovens were fabricated from polymer solution by needle electrospinning. The polymer solutions were loaded with Triton X-100 (TX- 100), formic acid and tetraethyl ammonium chloride (TEAC) with respect to polymer weight. Morphology of the PLLA nonwoven scaffolds was examined with SEM. We performed uniaxial tensile tests and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Different concentrations of the additives TEAC, formic acid and Triton X-100 lead to strong changes regarding mechanical and thermal properties of the electrospun PLLA fiber matrices. In comparison with mechanical properties of established biological tissue materials, the results indicate the suitability for medical applications.

Ti and Ti alloys are particularly attractive materials as the metallic implant-material. This is because that these alloys have low shear modulus and the good biological compatibility with bone. However, interfacial adhesion ability of bone and Ti alloy is low. As improvement method of the interfacial adhesion ability, bioaffinity material like hydroxyapatite has been coated on surface of the Ti alloys. However, such bioaffinity materials have low strength and wear resistance. In this study, Ti composites containing biodegradable poly-L-lactic-acid (PLLA) fiber were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The PLLA fiber plays a role as reinforcement in Ti matrix, and can be gradually decomposed inside body with progress of time. By the decomposition of PLLA, pore is generated in Ti matrix, and bone simultaneously penetrates into the pore. Therefore, tightly bond between bone and Ti matrix can be expected. Using the Ti-PLLA composites fabricated by SPS method, microstructural observation and mechanical tests were performed. It was found that Ti-PLLA composite has laminate-layer structure with plate-like shape PLLA. Hardness and wear behavior of Ti-PLLA composite has anisotropy due to its structure. However, strength of the Ti-PLLA composite is low because of the imperfect sintering of Ti matrix. Since sintering of Ti matrix can be improved by changing the temperature of SPS, Ti-PLLA composite with anisotropic mechanical properties can be expected by SPS method.

Due to the exceptional biocompatibility of spider silk and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), electrospun PLLA or spidroin fiber mat is one of the best biomaterials. The diameter of electropun PLLA fiber decreased and mechanical property of such fiber mats was improved once some spidroin was added into PLLA/Hexaflorisopropanol (HFIP) solution. The influence of electrospinning voltage and distance on the shape and mechanical properties of spidroin/PLLA composite fibers was investigated as well as the molecular conformation and crystalline structure of the electrospun fibers. The results revealed that the diameter of spidroin/PLLA fiber was non-uniform, which varied from 300nm to 1000nm. The content of random coil or α-helix structure was about 45%, and spidroin presented a crystal structure separated with PLLA in their composite fibers. With the raise of voltage, the proportion of nano-sized fibers in an electrospun spidroin/PLLA fiber mat increased and tended to be unchanged. The breaking strength of the mat was improved following the increase of voltage. Meanwhile, the ratio of nano-sized fibers and initial modulus of the spidroin/PLLA fiber mat underwent the convex change against the electrospinning distance between the needle and collector.

Stents have been used as a medical device to restore blood flow in stenosed vessels. During this process of stent expansion, the balloon and stent could damage the endothelial lining of the vascular wall [Grewe, Farb] and alter the mechanical stress states of various tissue components. The subsequent tissue re-growth and vascular remodeling have been implicated among the causes leading to restenosis. Stent designs vary over a wide range from materials used, geometric shapes, fabrication methods, treatments, among many other parameters. There are many different stent designs. We have developed an internally coiled, furled helical PLLA fiber stent at our institution [Su 03, Zilberman 02, 04, 05]. We have previously shown the effect of 62°C thermal annealing on the expansive characteristics of this stent [Welch 08].
