Reticular framework materials thrive on designability, but unexpected reaction outcomes are crucial in exploring new structures and functionalities. By combining “incompatible” building blocks, we employed geometric frustration in reticular materials leading to emergent structural features. The combination of a pseudo C<sub>5</sub> symmetrical organic building unit based on a pyrrole core, with a C<sub>4</sub> symmetrical copper paddlewheel synthon led to three distinct frameworks by tuning the synthetic conditions. The frameworks show structural features typical for geometric frustration: self-limiting assembly, internally stressed equilibrium structures and topological defects in the equilibrium structure, which manifested in the formation of a hydrogen bonded framework, distorted and broken secondary building units and dangling functional groups, respectively. The influence of geometric frustration on the CO<sub>2</sub> sorption behavior and the discovery of a new secondary building unit shows geometric frustration can serve as a strategy to obtain highly complex porous frameworks.

ZMOFs are a subset of MOFs that exhibit zeolite-like topologies. Using molecular building block strategy, many ZMOFs with high stability and excellent performance can be rationally designed and synthesized using different secondary building units.

Combination of a non-planar tripodal ligand 3,4-bi(4-carboxyphenyl)-benzoic acid (H3L) and Zn5O4-cluster secondary building units affords a highly connected three-dimensional metal–organic framework, {[Zn5(μ3-OH)3(μ2-OH)L2(H2O)2](H2O)2}n (1), which exhibits an unusual (3,4,9)-connected (42.5)(3.43.52)(32.45.511.613.73.82) topological net. The thermal stability and solid luminescence of the crystalline material have also been investigated.

The structure of the polymeric title compound, {[Zn2(C20H11NO4)2(C3H7NO)2(CH3OH)]·C3H7NO}n, comprises carbazolylisophthalate moieties connecting dimetallic tetracarboxylate zinc secondary building units (SBUs) parallel to [100] and [010], leading to a layer-like arrangement parallel to (001). Each SBU consists of two Zn atoms in slightly distorted tetrahedral and octahedral coordination environments [Zn...Zn = 3.5953 (6) Å]. Three carboxylate groups bridge the two Zn atoms in a μ2-O:O′ mode, whereas the fourth coordinates through a single carboxylate O atom (μ1-O). The O atoms of two dimethylformamide (DMF) and one methanol molecule complete the Zn coordination spheres. The methanol ligand interacts with the noncoordinating DMF moleculeviaan O—H...O hydrogen bond of medium strength. Carbazoles between the layers interdigitate through weak C—H....π interactions to form a laminar solid stacked along [010]. Two kinds of C—H...π interactions are present, both with a distance of 2.64 Å, between the H atoms and the centroids, and a third C—H...π interaction, where the aromatic H atom is located above the carbazole N-atom lone pair (H...N = 2.89 Å). Several C—H...O interactions occur between the coordinating DMF molecule, the DMF solvent molecule, and ligating carboxylate O atoms.
